| McBride & McGirt clicking at Vero Beach training camp VERO BEACH, Florida (September 16, 2007) – Two weeks into his first training camp in Vero Beach with new trainer James “Buddy” McGirt, Irish heavyweight champion Kevin “The Clones Colossus” McBride is even more confident of beating Andrew Golota in their October 6 crossroads fight at Madison Square Garden. “The big difference so far is Buddy is helping to increase my speed,” McBride reported. “He pushes me and keeps me on my toes. If my hands drop, Buddy’s on me to get them up. Even when he’s sitting in his office, he somehow knows exactly what I’m doing at all times in the gym. He believes in me. Buddy told me I have great power and I that I need to utilize it the right way. It’s hot down here but I love it. He’s getting the best out of me and people are going to see the real Kevin McBride –‘The Clones Colossus’ – on October 6th. “I’m going to put an end to Andrew Golota’s career just like I did to Mike Tyson. I won’t pick which round, but I’m going to knock out Golota. There’s going to be two big giants in the Madison Square Garden ring. Kevin Martin McBride is going to be like James J. Braddock in ‘Cinderella Man.’ What’s past, is past and my new manager, Jerry ‘The Mighty’ Quinn, put together a great new team for me. I’m 34 now and in my prime. One punch can change the chapter and it’s going to be my punch not Golota’s.” McGirt, the former world champion and Trainer of the Year, feels that McBride’s best days are ahead of him, starting Oct. 6 against Golota. “Kevin’s really underrated,” Buddy explained. “He’s more special than he’s shown and a very hard worker. McBride’s a strong SOB and I really like his work ethic. To beat Golota he has to keep his balance and not throw one punch at a time.” McBride (34-5-1, 29 KOs), born in Clones and fighting out of Boston, is continuing his nearly lifelong journey to become the first Ireland-born heavyweight champion of the world. “I’m hungry for glory to fulfill my dream of becoming the first Irish-born heavyweight champ of the world,” the 6’ 6” McBride added. “Golota’s in my way of achieving my dream. I’m in better shape – mentally, physically and spiritually – than I’ve ever been for a fight in my life, even better than for the Tyson fight. It’s because of my new team. I have all of the natural ability to become world champion. Now, I’m also a mean, lean fighting machine. I want all of my Irish fans to be there to watch the legacy of Kevin McBride with ‘The Mighty’ Quinn and Buddy McGirt in my corner.” |

| CES signs unbeaten heavyweight “Baby” Joe Mesi PROVIDENCE (September 14, 2007) – Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. (CES) has signed former world No. 1 heavyweight contender “Baby” Joe Mesi (35-0, 28 KOs) to an exclusive, multi-year promotional contract, CES president Jimmy Burchfield officially announced today. The 33-year-old Mesi, the pride of Buffalo, will fight Shannon “Trouble” Miller (15-3, 9 KOs) on October 12 in the 10-round main event for the vacant WBC USNBC heavyweight title at Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island. “I’ve been interested in signing Joe Mesi since he scored a devastating knockout on one of my undercards in 2000 at Rhodes-on-the-Pawtuxet in Cranston (RI),” a delighted Burchfield explained his longtime relationship with Team Mesi – Joe, his father/manager Jack and agent Bob Spagnola. “Joe Mesi is what boxing needs today. He’s already a great commentator and he’s going to be a great promoter, but boxing is what Joe Mesi does and what he wants to continue doing. Joe feels that his life is incomplete until he captures the heavyweight championship of the world. “My main concern with all of our fighters is their safety and well being. He has been examined by the top neurosurgeons in the world. I asked them for reports and a new MRI. Joe has been approved for licensing by the state of Rhode Island. Jack loves his son and he has taken every precaution. We will provide Dr. Robert Cantu’s (Chief Neurosurgeon Emerson Hospital in Boston) evaluation report to any interested officials or people in the media. Dr. Cantu’s report states that Joe has no more of a chance of suffering a brain injury than he did before the (Vassiliy) Jirov fight or any other fighter does entering the ring. “My credibility is on the line and I am 100-percent satisfied. Joe is what corporate America can relate to – a gentleman, articulate, handsome and he can box and punch. He has all of the right tools. Joe’s the third sports franchise back home in Buffalo. Everyone associated with CES is very happy that Joe has joined Team CES.” CES has always featured popular Italian-American fighters starting with 5-time world champion Vinny Paz and continuing with Gary “Tiger” Balletto and Peter Manfredo, Jr. Mesi’s boxing idol is the late, great Rocky Marciano, who was unbeaten in 28 Rhode Island fights with 25 knockouts (1948-52 at the old Rhode Island Auditorium). “We felt that at this point of my career,” Joe said, “it was in our best interest to get with a promoter. After talking with a lot of promoters, we decided that CES and Jimmy Burchfield was our best bet. He is very well respected, liked and trusted, which are uncommon in boxing. There’s something special about him in the community and he has no enemies. Everybody’s happy. We’ve signed with CES and Jimmy so he can assist us in getting back into the top 10 and eventually into a world championship fight. There are a lot of reasons why we fit, one being the large Italian-American communities in Providence and nearby Brockton (Marciano’s hometown) and Boston. There are a lot of great opportunities for us with CES throughout New England and the entire Northeast.” Back in 2003 before his fight against Monte Barrett, New York City’s Italian- American community welcomed Joe with open arms and at one reception, Rocky Marciano’s brother, Peter, publically backed Joe, saying in all the years that had passed, Joe was the first to have the Marciano family’s blessing in terms of breaking Rocky’s 49-0 record. Although flattered by the support of his idol’s family, Joe quickly noted that Rocky’s record would last forever because boxing was a different sport today and that Rocky had done it the right way. “It meant so much to us that the Marciano’s gave Joe their blessings and we hope they come to Joe’s fight October 12 in Rhode Island,” Joe’s father/manager Jack Mesi added. “We felt that we had brought Joe as far as we could in his comeback, 6-0, and we needed a highly respected promoter to take us to the next level – the world championship -- and Jimmy Burchfield is that promoter. He is a dynamo, an uncommon person in this sport. All of the so- called big name promoters have called me to make deals but we signed with CES and Jimmy Burchfield because he can get us to the world championship and all of us are very comfortable working with him.” CES’ growing stable includes WBC No. 2 rated cruiserweight contender Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (16-0, 9 KOs), star of The Contender I and world super middleweight title challenger Peter “The Pride of Providence” Manfredo, Jr., nine-time U.S. amateur champion Aaron Williams (14-0-1, 10 KOs), USNBC and IBF Intercontinental super middleweight title-holder Joey “KO Kid” Spina (19-1-1, 14 KOs), 2004 U.S. Olympian and heavyweight prospect Jason “Big Six” Estrada (9-1, 1KO), WBC Youth super featherweight champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard (11-0, 7 KOs), and four-time world champion and reigning 2-divisional IWBF title-belt holder Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (18-4-1, 7 KOs). | Star Boxing Announces RODRIGUEZ-COLLINS NO-CONTEST RULED RODRIGUEZ TKO WIN Bronx, NY - Sep 14, 2007 Joe DeGuardia's Star Boxing announced today that the NYSAC reversed the "No-Contest" decision that was declared after the Delvin Rodriguez 21- 2-1 (12KO's) vs Keenan Collins 12-3-1 (8KO's) bout. The result has been thus changed to a Rodriguez TKO victory. Although punches caused the cut, referee Eddie Claudio called it an accidental head butt. The Rodriguez camp asked the NYSAC to reverse the decision based on clear evidence that the cut was caused by punches and not a headbutt. The August 24th Star Boxing bout was broadcast on ESPN2's Friday Night Fights live from the Utopia Paradise Theatre in the Bronx, NY After reviewing the fight footage, the NYSAC came to the same conclusion that the fans in attendance and viewers watching the broadcast knew; there was no accidental head butt throughout the entire fight. "We respect and are very pleased with the decision by the NYSAC, it is a just and well deserved result for a young fighter who fought like a warrior in the first 2 rounds until the fight was unfortunately stopped," said DeGuardia. "It is refreshing that the NYSAC took a stance and did what is fair, just and appropriate. This is yet another step in the right direction for the sport of boxing." Team Rodriguez was pleased with the news "I want to thank the NYSAC for giving me a fair and just result. Now I can continue on with my game plan and get back in the ring as soon as possible," said a jubilant Rodriguez. About Star Boxing Star Boxing has been in operation since 1992. | MARQUEZ VS. JUAREZ BACK ON – NOVEMBER 3! SHOWTIME To Televise 130-Pound World Championship Bout, Plus, Featherweight Title Bout Between Guerrero and Honorio In First SHOWTIME Televised Golden Boy Event Saturday, November 3 at 9 p.m. ET/PT LOS ANGELES (Sept. 15, 2007) – Boxing fans were left disappointed last week by the announcement that the WBC super featherweight title bout between Juan Manuel Marquez and Rocky Juarez was called off due to a Marquez injury, but thanks to some quick work by Golden Boy Promotions and SHOWTIME, this championship bout has been quickly rescheduled – along with the IBF featherweight title bout between Robert Guerrero and Martin Honorio – for Saturday, Nov. 3. “Marquez-Juarez is a fight the fans wanted to see, and we pulled out all the stops to make it happen before the end of the year,” said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. “But we couldn’t have done this without Ken Hershman and SHOWTIME. We thank them for helping us put this great fight back on and are excited to be promoting our first SHOWTIME event.” “Delivering real fights for real fight fans on the first Saturday of every month is our trademark,” said Hershman, senior vice president and general manager, Showtime Sports & Event Programming. “We are excited to be working with Oscar and his company and we’re proud to deliver such a compelling match- up on the network.” Marquez, the WBC super featherweight champion, was forced to withdraw from his original date with Juarez (this Saturday, Sept. 15) after suffering an infection in his right hand. Doctors have assured the champion that he will be healed and ready to go for the rescheduled date of Nov. 3. Marquez vs. Juarez, which headlines an exciting night of world-class professional boxing presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Romanza Productions, will air live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING beginning at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). Mexico City’s Juan Manuel Marquez (47-3-1, 35 KOs) captured his second world championship and launched himself back into the upper reaches of the pound-for-pound list with a thrilling victory over the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera on March 17 of this year. Marquez, one of the best technicians of this era, is also known for his warrior heart, which led him to get off the canvas three times in the first round and battle to a 12-round draw against Manny Pacquiao in their Fight of the Year candidate in 2004. Houston’s Rocky Juarez (27-3, 19 KOs), a 2000 Olympic Silver medalist for the United States, has also met with great success in the pro ranks. Best remembered for his two bout series with Marco Antonio Barrera, the aggressive Juarez has won two in a row in 2007 and is eager to make it three by taking Marquez’ world title. One of the most exciting young champions in the sport today, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (20-1-1, 13 KOs) was considered to be a slick boxer early in his pro career, but has since developed into a two-fisted boxer-puncher who is deadly in all aspects of the sweet science. In his last bout, the 24-year old from Gilroy, California won the vacant IBF featherweight crown with an impressive ninth round TKO of veteran Spend Abazi. In Martin Honorio (24-3-1, 12 KOs), Guerrero will be facing a hungry contender who has waited a long time for his shot at the world title. Unbeaten in his last seven fights, this Mexico City resident is coming off solid back-to-back wins over Rogers Mtagwa and Joe Morales to earn this title opportunity. A venue for the Nov. 3 Marquez vs. Juarez fight will be announced shortly. |
