WBC HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP OLEG MASKAEV AND
SAMUEL PETER SET TO ‘RING’ IN THE NEW

NEW YORK (Sept. 19, 2007) - WBC Heavyweight World Champion Oleg
Maskaev, and his impending challenger Samuel Peter joined “Smokin” Joe
Frasier, Emile Griffith, Iran Barkley and a host of world-class prizefighters at
Madison Square Garden today to retire the historic boxing ring that has hosted
world championship title fights since 1925.

Frazier, Maskaev and Peter conducted the ceremonial 10-count to officially
retire the ring by striking the Garden’s original brass bell.  The bell, the one that
has adorned the Garden’s ring for 82 years, will continue in service alongside
the new boxing ring that will host Maskaev and Peter when they clash for the
WBC heavyweight world championship on Oct. 6, 2007 (live on SHOWTIME, 10
p.m. ET/PT).

Following the ceremony, the fighters met with members of the media for one-
on-one interview sessions.

Oleg Maskaev: 34-5, 26 KOs – Fighting out of Staten Island, N.Y. by way of
Zambuhl , Kazakhstan

“It is a big honor to be in this ring with all these great champions today,
especially here at Madison Square Garden .  This is a big event for me in my
life.  Oct. 6 will be a big event as well. It’s a big test for me to get through.

“In my career, every fight is a special fight. If you loose the opportunity to defend
your world title, then that is it, you’re out.

“It is one job to win the world title. It is another job to defend it.”

“There is much more pressure on you to defend the title. You have to be a
champion in every way. You have to be a champion in training, a champion on
days like today and a champion on the street. This, here today, is part of being
a world champion.

“I have a big responsibility to my friends, my fans, my family and my children
and all of their friends. I can’t let them down.

“This is my motivation. I put pressure on myself and that pressure has helped
me prepare for this fight. It helps me keep my focus.”

Sam Peter: 28-1, 22 KOs – Fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev. by way of Akwa
Ibom, Nigeria

“I am very disappointed that I could not win the heavyweight world
championship in this sacred ring – in its last fight. But I am equally as excited
that I will win my heavyweight championship in the very first fight in a new ring. I
am honored that I will be the first world champion to bless it… the new ring.

“It is great to be around so many of these great champions. Frazier, Hopkins,
Barkley, everybody. We have been in this ring for nearly an hour today and it
really is an exciting experience, a special day. No one can take that from me.

“On Oct. 6, I will be making history of my own. I have waited a long time for this
opportunity and I am not going to let Maskaev leave this building with the title. In
100 years, when they retire the new boxing ring, they will have to say that ‘Sam
Peter was here in 2007, he knocked out Maskaev for the title.  What a great
night for boxing’.”
WBC No. 1-Ranked Mandatory Challenger
Adrian ‘The Shark’ Diaconu Suffers Serious Hand Injury;
Epifanio ‘Diamante’ Mendoza Named as Replacement
To Fight WBC Light Heavyweight Champion ‘Bad’ Chad Dawson
At Sacramento’s ARCO Arena on Sept. 29

SACRAMENTO, Calif—World Boxing Council No. 1-ranked mandatory
challenger Adrian “The Shark” Diaconu, scheduled to fight for a title against
WBC lightweight champion “Bad” Chad Dawson at ARCO Arena in
Sacramento, suffered a training injury on Thursday forcing him to pull out of the
Sept. 29 match.

Dangerous light heavyweight knockout artist Epifanio Mendoza (28-4-1, 24
KOs), from Barranquilla, Colombia, has agreed to replace Diaconu and will
face Dawson in the Sept. 29 main event.

“This is a dream come true to have the opportunity to fight Chad Dawson for the
WBC light heavyweight title,” an obviously enthused Mendoza said after flying
into promoter Don King’s Deerfield Beach, Fla., headquarters to sign the match
contract this afternoon [Sept. 18].  “I have fought in and won numerous national
and continental championships but this will be my first world title fight.  I plan
on taking the title back to Colombia.”

Fight promoter Don King likened the event to a Rocky movie, but this time it’s
for real.

“Adrian Diaconu’s misfortune becomes Epifanio Mendoza’s opportunity to
make history,” King said.  “Adrian will recover to fight another day and Epifanio
has a chance to become a real-life Rocky, just like in the movies.  This type of
thing happens from time to time in boxing and it adds another level of intrigue
into our September 29 main event.”

The training injury occurred on Thursday [Sept. 13], the day after Diaconu and
his trainer Pierre Bouchard had attended Sacramento and San Francisco
press conferences promoting the fight on Wednesday [Sept. 12].

Diaconu was so anxious to not miss another day of his scheduled training that
he took a late-night flight back to Montreal, which arrived on Thursday at 7 a.m.
During his sparring session later that day, he injured his right hand.  He
complained of pain on the base of the hand between his knuckles and wrist.

Dawson vs. Mendoza lead release

On Friday morning, Diaconu visited Dr. Claude LeBlanc, a noted sports
physician in Montreal, who advised him to undergo an immediate M.R.I., which
was completed yesterday afternoon [Sept. 17].  The imaging revealed that
Diaconu suffered bone contusions on the base of his hand on the third and
fourth metacarpals with soft tissue damage in the surrounding areas.

After LeBlanc read the results, he advised Diaconu to not participate in his
scheduled match with Chad Dawson.  He also prescribed rehabilitative
treatment for the next few weeks until the injury heals to the point where it can
be re-evaluated.

A second world championship remains on the card featuring two once-beaten
fighters with Luis “El Demoledor” Perez (25-1, 21 KOs), from Nicaragua,
making the first defense of his International Boxing Federation bantamweight
title opposing British Commonwealth champion Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko
(24-1, 21 KOs), from Ghana.  Eight bouts are expected to be on the full card.

Tickets priced at $30, $50, $75, $100 and $250 are on sale now and may be
purchased most easily by calling Ticketmaster Charge-By-Phone at (916) 649-
TIXS or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.  Tickets are also available at the
ARCO Arena Box Office and at all Sacramento-area Ticketmaster outlets.  Both
world championships will be televised on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP
BOXING at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).  The event is being
promoted by Don King Productions in association with Maloof Sports &
Entertainment.

Dawson (24-0, 16 KOs), a 25-year-old southpaw from New Haven, Conn.,
possesses the WBC 175-pound title Roy Jones Jr. held from 1997 to 2004.
Dawson upset previously unbeaten Tomasz Adamek (31-0) to win the WBC
crown on Feb. 3 in Kissimmee, Fla.  In his most recent appearance he made a
successful title defense against Jesus “Chuy” Ruiz on June 9 in Hartford, Conn.
DUVA SAYS RAPPAPORT WAS DISRESPECTFUL OF
MSG SACRED RING FOR INSISTING ON CHANGE
PRIOR TO MASKAEV-PETER WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT
CHAMPIONSHIP; ADDS THAT PETER WILL CHRISTEN
IN NEW GARDEN RING WITH A VICTORY

New York, September 20—Dino Duva, president of Duva Boxing, the promoter
of WBC no. 1 contender Samuel Peter, was very emotional about the fact that
the sacred Madison Square Garden boxing ring has been retired before Peter’s
October 6 World Heavyweight Title fight against Oleg Maskaev, and not after the
fight.

“Yesterday, I had chills the entire time during the MSG ring retirement
ceremony,” said Duva. “Anyone whose life has been boxing had to feel that way.
I was always told that the plan was to retire the ring AFTER the October 6 event,
meaning Samuel would be able to be the last fighter to win a world
championship in this sacred ring.

“It was a bush league, disrespectful manuever by Dennis Rappaport, to insist
on that clause changing the size of the ring without my knowledge or approval,”
added Duva. “And this was all over a one and a half foot total difference in ring
size!

“Not that one and a half feet, or even ten feet, would make a difference in the
outcome,” wrapped up Duva. “There will be a major victory for Samuel, but it
would have been wonderful for Sam to be the last Champion in history to walk
out of that ring. However, there will be a sliver lining to this: Samuel Peter will
now be the FIRST fighter in history to win a world title in the new MSG ring,
which I'm sure over time will have an equal amount of history to it.”
KLITSCHKO FIGHT AGAINST MCCLINE
CANCELLED DUE TO SURGERY

Innsbruck/Hamburg, September 11 – The boxing match between Vitali
Klitschko (36) and American boxer Jameel McCline(37), scheduled for
September 22nd in Munich , has been cancelled, as the Ukrainian boxer has
just undergone surgery for a herniated disc.

Last weekend Klitschko suffered an acute herniated disc at his training camp
in Going , Austria , necessitating immediate surgery. The emergency surgery
was performed late Saturday night at the University Clinic in Innsbruck .
According to the attending physician Prof. Dr. Twerdy, “the operation was a
complete success, but obviously Mr. Klitschko will not be able to compete in a
match in two weeks. After 4 to 6 weeks of rehabilitation, Vitali Klitschko will be
able to start training again.”

Vitali Klitschko: “This is unbelievably bad luck. I’ve been in intense preparations
for 9 weeks, had no problems whatsoever, and then a disc goes and slips in
my last week of training. I was in prime shape, and was looking forward so
much to my match. I feel especially bad for our TV partners RTL and Showtime
as well as for my fans who were looking forward to the broadcast or who had
bought tickets for the match in Munich .”

Klitschko’s coach Fritz Sdunek said: “Vitali was in such good shape. Many
representatives of the press were able to see for themselves at the press
training session last week. He was completely relaxed and at the same level
he was at when he was champion. This is really an incredible blow for Vitali,
but he must hang in there now and think positive. I’m sure that we will soon
see Vitali in the ring again despite this temporary setback.”

Said Davaryl Williamson, Vitali's chief sparring partner: "Vitali was in great
shape when I arrived in the training camp in  Austria and he looked to be back
to a world class level in sparring."

Vitali Klitschko will be released from the clinic in Innsbruck today and will return
to Hamburg .
