| INTERVIEW WITH WBO HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION SULTAN IBRAGIMOV John Martinez - Boxingrealm.com (25Sept07) On October 13, live from Moscow and shown in real time on PPV, WBO heavyweight champion, Sultan Ibragimov (21,0,1,17KO’s) will defend his title against the legend and former four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (42,8,2,27KO’s). This fight will pit a young and determined belt holder against a proven fierce warrior that believes destiny is on his side. Here is what the champ had to say. JM: Have you prepared for this fight any differently than other fights you have had? SI: Well we have done pretty much the same work as we always have. But we have trained more on my defense for this fight. Holyfield is very good and very dangerous so we have to prepare for him very seriously. I have been working and sparring with two smaller fighters and one big one in order to get ready for Holyfield. I don’t want to give their names, but two of them are undefeated fighters. | BORIS GRINBERG SPEAKS ABOUT WBO CHAMP SULTAN IBRAGIMOV, HOLYFIELD, SAM PETER, AND WLADIMIR John Martinez - Boxingrealm.com “He will make Peter look like a fool.” (25Sept07) Moments ago, I spoke with Boris Grinberg, manager of WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov regarding Sultan’s upcoming clash with four time heavyweight champion, Evander Holyfield on October 13 live on PPV. He graciously accepted the interview and also gave his views on what a match up would look like between his charge and newly crowned Interim WBC titlist Sam Peter would be plus how his fighter would take on IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko should they ever meet. JM: Boris, would you please give your honest thoughts on what was/is going through your mind now that Evander Holyfield is facing your charge, WBO heavyweight champion Sultan Ibragimov as opposed to the original foe, WBA Ruslan Chagaev? BG: Well, first of all, it was a big shock when I heard that Chagaev couldn’t fight because of his health. Sultan was also upset because he had promised all of his fans that he was going to unify the titles. That wasn’t going to happen now. We did try and look at other available fighters and it was Holyfield who was most available at the time. But also understand that all of Moscow was covered with big signs and advertisements saying that this was going to be a big fight between Chagaev and Ibragimov. So, we had to spend a lot of money to change those signs and change the advertising for this fight. Now we understand that this was better for Sultan because more people know of Holyfield and not Chagaev. So this is going to be better for Sultan because he will get more famous from this one fight since he’s fighting the “ Real Deal”. JM: What do you think about Samuel Peter being named the Interim WBC heavyweight champion? BG: Well first of all, we are taking Holyfield very very seriously. I have seen him and he looks like he is in very good shape. He looks fit and real, real good. We don’t want to look past Holyfield. But since you asked, I will tell you my personal opinion on the issue. You know, we have a genius in Jeff Mayweather. He has been working with Sultan for a year now and has changed him a lot. Jeff doesn’t talk a lot like his nephew or brothers. He is very quiet and confident. He comes in and does his business and has really made Sultan a better all around professional boxer. Sultan isn’t afraid of anybody. He wants to fight them all. But all fighters get their belts and then say they want to unify, but instead they fight their mandatory fights, get paid, and then they’re out. Not Sultan. He is looking great. He is very smart and I will tell you that he will make Peter look like a fool. I personally want to see Sultan fight Wladimir. Too many guys stay on the outside against him. With Jeff Mayweather, we have a genius trainer that will draw up a plan that will prepare Sultan very well to take advantage of Sultan’s strengths. This would be like Corrie Sanders and Lamon Brewster put together in one fighting on the inside of Klitschko. I think that HBO and SHOWTIME have made a big mistake in thinking that only Wladimir Klitschko fights in the division. JM: Thank you for your time Boris. BG: Thank you. The fight for the WBO heavyweight title between four time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield (42,8,2, 27 KO’s) and current belt holder, Sultan Ibragimov (21,0,1, 17KO’s), will air live from Moscow on PPV October 13 at 1PM ET/10 AM PT. The suggested price for this card is $34.95. |

WORLD BOXING COUNCIL NEWS September 24, 2007 – Mexico City From WBC President Jose Sulaiman: World Boxing Council heavyweight world champion Oleg Maskaev, from Kazakhstan-Russia, suffered a multiple disc herniation injury which will cause him to be inactive for at least for the next three or four months, according to his lawyer, which would lead the heavyweight division to 14 months without activity. Consequently, his fight against official challenger Samuel Peter from Nigeria , scheduled for October 6 at Madison Square Garden , will not take place. To avoid the fact that the WBC Heavyweight division remains frozen, the WBC Board of Governors has conclusively voted to name Samuel Peter as the WBC heavyweight interim world champion. Rules 1.26 (4) and 1.27 of the WBC Rules and Regulations explicitly allows the WBC, in an instance where an interim title is applicable, to recognize as interim champion the winner of a previous elimination fight. Samuel Peter won not only one, but two final elimination bouts in a row against James Toney in September, 2006, and in January, 2007. Rules 1.26 and 1.27 read: 1.26 Vacant Title. If a title becomes vacant for any reason, the Board of Governors may in its discretion take whatever steps or actions it deems necessary or appropriate to fill the title, including but not limited to: 1) authorize and cause to be instituted a tournament or elimination contest among leading available contenders in the division of the vacant title, with the winner being recognized as the new champion; or 2) authorize or cause to be instituted a direct bout between the two highest rated available boxers and recognize the winner as the champion; or 3) appoint as challenger the champion of a lower or higher division to contend against the highest rated available boxer of the division for the vacant title; or 4) recognize as champion the winner of a previous elimination bout. This list is non-exclusive. The Board of Governors may impose such conditions as it deems proper and necessary in its discretion upon the new champion winning a vacant title, including but not limited to: 1) designating the boxer against whom the first defense of the title must be made (who may be selected from the highest rated available boxers or a boxer selected through a final elimination bout); 2) ordering the new champion to make his first mandatory defense within ninety (90) to one hundred and twenty (120) days of acquiring the title; 3) if requested and feasible, to approve one voluntary defense, with the condition that the winner must meet his official mandatory challenger next. This list is also non- exclusive. 1.27 Interim Championship. The WBC may order an interim title bout when a world champion will be temporarily inactive and unable to defend his title for a period to exceed 6 months due to: a) certified medical reasons b) a legal impediment; or c) reasonable cause strictly beyond his control. In ordering the interim championship, the WBC will follow any of the steps mandated in Rule 1.26. If the inactivity is estimated to exceed one (1) year, the title shall be declared vacant. Upon the return of the champion, the WBC will order a mandatory bout for the undisputed WBC title with the interim champion. Both boxers are bound to participate in this bout and cannot participate in an intervening contest, except in special circumstances approved by a majority vote of the Board of Governors. If the bout is promoted through purse offer procedures, the purse split will be 55% for the champion and 45% for the interim champion. The WBC may alter this split at its discretion pursuant to the provisions of Rule 2.11 (d). If the champion does not return after a year of inactivity, he will forfeit the title to the interim champion, who will automatically become the undisputed WBC champion. The World Boxing Council will present interim world champion Samuel Peter his WBC interim world champion title in the following days.

Pavlik shocks Taylor; A new Middleweight Champion is crowned Rising Star Andre Berto continues to impress
The fight that was billed as the perfect matchup may have been just that. Jermain Taylor fought well throughout the bout with his only flaw being little or no defense for Pavlik's right hand. Taylor held a clear speed advantage from the outset and that combined with his ability to land hard flurries led to Pavlik crashing to the mat in the 2nd round. Pavlik rose to his feet and attempted to shake off the cobwebs. Taylor pounced like a lion on wounded prey and tried to finish what he started. Pavlik absorbed some punishment, survived the round and gave himself a chance to win. Kelly Pavlik was tested early and it was his ability to rise to the occasion and lift himself off the canvas
was truly remarkable. More impressive was the way he finished the night. Taylor and Pavlik proceeded to engage in one of the most entertaining fights of the year. Pavlik, trailing on every judges scorecard, unleashed a devastating assault on Taylor forcing referee Steve Smoger to call the fight to an end. With both Pavlik and Taylor most likely venturing up to Super Middleweight, as well as the departure of heavy hitter Edison Miranda, the once crowded division may now belong to Arthur Abraham or a fighter yet to emerge. Undefeated Welterweight Andre Berto scored the most impressive win of his young career with a knockout of battle tested David Estrada. Berto appears ready to make some noise in the most talent rich division in the sport.

For The Puerto Rican Lightweight Championship... Article By: Jim Amato How do they keep turning out such great fighters ? Jose Torres, Felix Trinidad and now Miguel Cotto and Kermit Cintron. Puerto Rico has put their stamp on the fistic map ! In the forty years I've followed the great sport of boxing I've seen two lightweights that were not only Puerto Rican standouts but in my opinion among the greatest lightweights of all time. I am speaking of former champions Carlos Ortiz and the late Esteban DeJesus. Who would have won if these two fine fighting machines had met in their primes ? Carlos Ortiz dominated the lightweight division in the mid and late 60's. He was extremely strong and powerful for his weight. He was also more clever then ever given credit for. He was a solid puncher with a sturdy chin. Only the vastly talented Ismael Laguna was able to give Carlos problems at his peak. Then you have Esteban DeJesus. If there was ever a fighter who fought at the wrong time it was Esteban. If only Roberto Duran had not been around... DeJesus beat Duran in their first bout, a non-title affair. Roberto then came back to twice halt Esteban in championship encounters. In between all that Esteban a the W.B.C. version of the title by whipping Guts Suzuki. This is not a feat that should taken lightly. Suzuki had held his own with Laguna and Duran. He twice kayoed the respected Rodolfo Gonzalez. He won against tough Tury " The Fury " Pineda and defeated future Hall Of Famer Ken Buchanan. By defeating Suzuki, DeJesus proved he was the top challenger for Roberto's undisputed claim. History tells us that Roberto won their rubber match and moved on into boxing legend. Esteban would slowly fade from the scene. After Carlos Ortiz lost the title in an upset to Carlos " Teo " Cruz, he to would fade from the limelight. He would come back in the mid 70's in hopes of fighting Duran. Instead he would meet the clever Buchanan who stopped the shopworn Ortiz. How would Ortiz and DeJesus match up ? Who would have come out on top ? These two men were fifteen round fighters. The true championship distance. DeJesus may have been the better overall boxer. He was a smooth counterpuncher. His counter left was awesome. Ask Duran. Esteban floored Roberto twice with that punch. Ortiz was the stronger and probably the harder hitter although neither fighter was a one punch KO artist. I see Esteban outspeeding and outboxing Ortiz in the early going. Carlos is smart and he's not allowing himself to get hit with any big shots. Still DeJesus is setting the pace and building up a nice points lead. Carlos begins to to close the margin during the middle rounds. While he becomes more aggressive he leaves himself open for Esteban's effective counters. After ten hard fought rounds DeJesus has a slight lead. The tide begins to turn in rounds eleven and twelve as the strength of Ortiz becomes a factor. Going into the " championship rounds ", it has become anyone's fight. Only a fool could not see that at this point Carlos was the fresher of the two. Esteban was wilting from the Ortiz body attack as well as his bully tactics. A sustained body barrage puts Esteban down for a short count in the thirteenth. Another body blistering has him down late in the fourteenth. Somehow Esteban finds the strength to rally in the last round as now Ortiz seems spent. The final bell... The winner by a close but unanimous decision; Carlos Ortiz !!!
MILLION DOLLAR MAYBE Book Review By: Jim Amato Category: Books Genre: Sports Author: Bill Coleman Bill Coleman wanted to be boxer. He wrote about his aspirations while in High School in 1979. He did embark on an amateur career and he won the 1986 South Dakota 132 pound Golden Gloves title. As the saying goes, " Life comes at you fast ". Soon Bill was working his way up the corporate ladder and raising a family. Nevertheless the boxing bug never left Bill. By now Bill had become a corporate Vice President with a lucrative income but he still had that burning desire to box. Finally Bill made a decision that would alter his life. In 2002 at the age of forty he became a professional boxer. He walked away from a high paying job. He strained his relationships with family and friends but he was determined to pursue his dream. His dream ended in 2004 compliments of the Nevada State Athletic Commission for reasons Bill never quite agreed with. Bill estimates with projested income, stock options and other perks he lost about a million dollars while chasing the brass ring. That is not to mention the extensive damage to his personal life. I enjoyed this book. It was honest and to the point. It is not yet in mass print but if you would like a copy contact Bill Coleman at : hometowndecisions@earthlink.net
