| Joan Guzman dominated Humberto Soto for most of the fight to retain his WBO Jr. Lightweight Title Saturday from the Borgata Resort & Casino in Atlantic City. The show was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and was broadcasted live on HBO’s Boxing After Dark Series. Joan Guzman used his excellent counter-punching skills and took advantage of his much faster hand speed to control ten out of twelve rounds (on my scorecard) of this fight to keep his undefeated record in tact. | Mayorga Out Performs Vargas Article By: Bill Calogero - TheDailySports.com |
“The Brawl” as it was billed, was yet another good fight for this very resurgent year in Professional Boxing. Both fighters showed a real dislike for each other for the very long promotional period. One of the reasons for the delay was that the fight was at a “catch-weight” of 166lbs. Ricardo Mayorga had to gain over twenty pounds. Fernando Vargas had to lose almost one hundred. Read the Full Story.....

Malignaggi punches back at critics
NEW YORK (November 26, 2007) – International Boxing Federation light welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi, rated No. 2 by The Ring, believes stylish boxing skills like his are far less appreciated in today’ s knockout-crazed world of boxing than it's ever been. “Pure boxers today aren’t as highly valued as they should be,” the outspoken Brooklyn pugilist said from his Vero Beach (FL) training camp. “Even all-time great boxers like Willie Pep and Pernall Whitaker, if they were boxing today, wouldn’t be as appreciated. Floyd Mayweather is the best in the world, maybe ever, but critics complain because he’s so good that, he wins so easily and isn’t in wars. Now-a- days everybody wants to see punching, not boxing skills, and that’s a shame. Read the Full Story.....
On December 1st, live from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, three champions put their titles on the line in the season finale of Showtime Championship Boxing. Two respected veterans of the fight game, Antonio Tarver and Vernon Forrest, scored impressive victories over tough yet ill-equipped opponents in Danny Santiago and Michele Piccirillo. Nonito Donaire overwhelmed Luis Maldanado in his first title defense since upsetting Vic Darchinyan. All three men entered the ring with something to prove. For Tarver and Forrest an inspiring win would keep them on track for bigger, more meaningful fights that would lead to big paydays, and help cement their status as two elite fighters of this generation. A successful defense for Donaire versus a tough challenger legitimized his win over Darchinyan and proved that “The Filipino Flash” wasn’t “The Filipino Flash” in the pan. Three Champions entered, prevailed, and proved their points with authority. Read the Full Ringside Report.....

James Kirkland improves to 21-0 (18 KOs) with a first round KO over Allen Conyers in their scheduled ten-round Jr. Middleweight contest. It was the main event of ShowTime’s ShoBox series, which they broadcast live from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. Gary Shaw Productions promoted Friday night’s show. Both fighters attacked each other from the beginning of the first round wildly. After thirty seconds had past, Allen Conyers landed a crushing right to the head of Kirkland sending him to the canvas. He was up and ready to go by the count of eight. As soon as referee Ray Corona allowed the two combatants to continue, the war raged on. Conyers tried to finish Kirkland off by throwing wild punches from every angle, but James immediately turned the fight in his favor by landing solid right of his own sending Alien Conyers down. He was up and ready to continue, but still seemed to be in trouble. His legs were definitely not 100%. Read the Full Story.....

Mayweather scores TKO win over Hatton: "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather keeps his title and remains undefeated
Fight Results By: Phil Santos - Overhandright.com

Floyd Mayweather Jr. pulls out an impressive victory by outlasting and eventually stopping the previously undefeated Ricky Hatton. In what turned out to be a terrific fight with great exchanges and plenty of drama Floyd showed to be the more precise puncher and superior defender. Ricky Hatton did well to take his share of rounds on my scorecard (a view not shared by the judges who had it 89-81, 89-81, 88-82) by mugging Mayweather against the ropes and making the fight a brawl. His early success began to fade by the 7th round or so as Mayweather started picking his shots and visibly stunning Hatton. Read the Full Story.....

| Floyd Mayweather Jr.: “Money” Mayweather remained perfect by knocking out one of the best pound for pound fighters on the planet in Ricky Hatton but did little to silence his critics. Mayweather finds himself in the same situation now as after the De La Hoya fight. He notched another win over a big name opponent (a list which includes Angel Manfredy, Diego Corrales, Jesus Chavez, Jose Luis Castillo (2), Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir, Oscar De La Hoya, and now Ricky Hatton) but whether it is questionable match making due to age, weight, or skill level of his challenger “Pretty Boy” will always draw harsh reviews from fans and media alike. | HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 – Former world junior welterweight champion Juan Urango is a changed man. That was never more evident than on Wednesday night, when he dispatched of 62 fight veteran Marty Robbins in five rounds to up his record to 19-1-1 with 15 KOs. “I’m taking this sport much more seriously than ever and I plan on ending every one of my fights from here on out with a knockout,” said Urango. “I want my world title back in 2008 and whoever I have to beat to get back there, I will.” The win over Robbins was Urango’s second since a hard fought decision loss to Ricky Hatton in January. After some soul searching, Urango has left that fight in the past and only looks forward to a bright future. “What’s done is done and I can’t worry about what happened in January with Hatton,” said Urango. “I learned from my defeat and I have changed the way I approach the game. The champions at the top of this division need to watch out, because I’m coming for them.” |

Floyd Mayweather Jr. kept his perfect record in tact Saturday night by stopping Ricky Hatton in the tenth round of their scheduled twelve round Welterweight Championship fight. The contest was the Main Event of “Undefeated”, which was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and broadcast live from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas by HBO PPV. Ricky Hatton pressed the fight. He was the aggressor for most of the contest. Floyd Mayweather was forced to fight Hatton’s fight and turned out to be the victor. With the MGM Grand Arena, packed with singing British fans, both fighters began the fight by going right after each other. It was obvious from the start that Mayweather had the hand and foot speed, but Ricky was a lot quicker than Floyd may have thought. The first round found both fighters landing punches, mostly to the head of each other. Hatton landed a very solid left to the jaw of Mayweather that clearly stunned him. It was a close round, but on my scorecard, I gave round one to Ricky Hatton. Read the Full Story.....

Marquez, Marquez and Taylor: The likelihood of Victory Part I Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com Photo By: Golden Boy Promotions

With, what should be, two exciting rematches and a rubber match upcoming I got to thinking: Do any of these talented current and former champions have any hope at being victorious? The prospect of Juan Manuel Marquez, Raphael Marquez and Jermain Taylor all losing their next fight seems improbable, until you take a look at their opposition. Both Jermain Taylor and Raphael Marquez tasted defeat by way of knockout in their last fight. For Taylor the loss was his first and for Marquez his first in nearly seven years. The elder Marquez, Juan Manuel, is riding a four fight winning streak with his last two coming over Rocky Juarez and Marco Antonio Barrera. Read the Full Story.....
Marquez, Marquez and Taylor: The Likelihood of Victory Part II Kelly Pavlik vs. Jermain Taylor By: Phil Santos - Overhandright.com

The fight was billed as “The Perfect Match Up” but nobody could have predicted the battle that ensued. During the fight both combatants hit the canvas, absorbed punishing power shots, and put on a performance that landed the event on most observers short list for “Fight of the Year”. Jermain Taylor had gone from being considered the next great Middleweight, after defeating Bernard Hopkins twice and fighting Winky Wright to a Draw, to being the target of fan and media criticism over a span of less than two years. The fact that Taylor was matched up against blown up Jr. Middleweights with less than average power badly hurt his reputation. What further damaged his credibility was his inability to score a knockout against the likes of Kassim Ouma and Cory Spinks. Read the Full Story.....
Marquez, Marquez and Taylor: The Likelihood of Victory Part III Raphael Marquez vs. Israel Vazquez By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com Photo By: Tom Casino - Showtime

Two of the worlds most gifted pound for pound boxers gave us, not one, but two fights worthy of “Fight of the Year” consideration in 2007. A date of March 1st 2008 has been speculated for a third meeting but as of this writing not confirmed. Provided the two are able to get together to cap off a trilogy that, despite the outcome of the third fight, is already a classic. Raphael Marquez and Israel Vazquez should deliver another outstanding performance. Over a total of 13 rounds, a little more than a championship bout, Raphael Marquez and Israel Vazquez brought it for every second. In their first encounter Marquez came out on top, stopping Vazquez, who was unable to continue because of a broken nose, by TKO. Vazquez, despite having to surrender, had his share of highlights in the fight. He floored Marquez with a stiff combo in the 3rd and did good work throughout. Marquez, a natural Bantamweight, Read the Full Story.....
HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 10 - You only have one chance to make a first impression, and Jean Pascal did not impress Edison Miranda this past Friday night during his 10 round bout with Brian Norman at the Bell Center in Montreal. “I came all the way from the sunny weather of San Juan to the snow in Montreal, to watch nothing more than a club fight. They pulled Jean’s opponent right out of the circus to give him an easy night, but it was the opposing clown who stole many rounds away from Jean. If this guy thinks he has any chance in beating Edison Miranda he better go back to school and learn how to fight like a real man. The only thing that impressed me was the wonderful fans of Canada. I admire their desire to see a great fight, but felt bad for them with this disappointing circus event that Pascal delivered. They came out on a snowy cold night and were given nothing to cheer for during this bout. I will ma! ke a promise to these great fans. When Edison Miranda comes back to town they will have a reason to cheer. Listen to me Jean: by the end of the night, you will be lying on the canvas and 15,000 fans will chanting ‘panthère’ (French for Pantera). You are nothing more than a Chinatown boxer.” Pantera and Jean Pascal will again be side by side on Jan 11th on ESPN Friday Night Fights. The event will be broadcast live from the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood Florida.

HOLLYWOOD, FL December 12 – In the tradition of the classic baseball movie, Field of Dreams, which states, “Build it, and they will come,” fans have responded to the February 23rd world heavyweight title unification bout between IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov by snapping up tickets for the bout – which will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City - at a breakneck pace. “We’re ecstatic about the ticket sales so far for Klitschko vs. Ibragimov,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing. “I think this reaction shows that when you put the two best heavyweights in the world in the ring together, the fans will respond.” “We have priced tickets very reasonably and are on track to sell out the Garden", said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. Klitschko vs. Ibragimov, a 12 round heavyweight title unification bout, headlines a historic night of boxing presented by K2 Promotions and Seminole Warriors Boxing and will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing.

In a career that spanned from 1956 to 1975, Eddie Perkins engaged in 99 professional fights. He won seventy five of those contests. He met opponents in over twenty different countries. He truly was a " world " champion. Ediie lost three of his first five bouts but rallied to win seven straight. In 1958 he lost to Cleveland, Ohio's Cecil Shorts. He stopped Shorts in a rematch and then he outscored rugged Franke Ryff. In 1959 Eddie won a decision over Paul Armstead but lost to Carl Hubbard and was then halted by Al Urbina. It would be the only stoppage loss of Eddie's career. 1960 was a good year for Perkins as he beat Larry Boardman, Paolo Rosi and Joey Lopes. In 1961 Perkins lost a verdict to Youngstown, Ohio's L.C. Morgan. He would bounce right back to outscore the hard hitting Carlos Hernandez. That would lead to Eddie's first title shot and on October 21st he met defending WBA junior welterweight champion Dulio Loi in Milan, Italy. After fifteen rounds, the bout was judged a draw. They would meet again eleven months later and this time Eddie won the decision and captured his first world title. Read the Full Story.....

| Edwin Valero improves to 23-0 (23 KOs) with the destruction of Zaid Zavaleta in the third round of their scheduled twelve-round Super Featherweight Championship. The contest was the Main Event of “Night Of Champions” broadcast live on PPV from the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday night. Valero, as he always does, came out aggressive and on the attack. Although he claims to train for twelve round bouts, one would never guess it if they watched him fight. To me, he wants to end the fight as quickly as possible. He was throwing punches from every angle, landing on the head and body of Zaid Zavaleta. Zaid, tried to counter Edwin’s attack by throwing and landing several hard shots to the jaw of Valero, but nothing slowed the Champion down. As the ten-second warning was given, Valero landed a solid left that sent Zavaleta down. He was up at eight, was allowed to continue and the bell sounded to end the first round. | We do not yet know when newly crowned World Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik will make his first title defense. What we do know is that his next bout will be fought at a catch weight of 166, a weight that is more comfortable, after it was well noted that both Pavlik and Taylor were beginning to have difficulty making 160. Kelly Pavlik will step in with Jermain Taylor for their eagerly anticipated rematch on February 16th. Jermain Taylor, the former title holder, and Kelly Pavlik are expected to eventually make the logical move to 168. |
Where does Kelly Pavlik Rank at Super Middleweight? By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

It would surprise me if Pavlik didn’t make at least a defense or two of his Middleweight title but there are some great fights to be had at Super Middle. If the current champ and the recently deposed champ make the leap up in weight where do they rank among the best Super Middleweights in the world? Does Kelly Pavlik have the tools to clean out the Super Middleweight Division? Could Pavlik possibly put an end to Joe Calzaghe’s reign as Super Middleweight Boss? The three main concerns that normally arise when talks of moving up in weight for a fighter are: Will you sacrifice too much speed? Will your power carry over at a higher weight? Will your chin hold up against bigger fighters? For Kelly Pavlik questions about speed and power carrying over at a higher weight aren’t too concerning. Pavlik is a big, tough fighter who fights like so. Not to imply that he is unskilled, in fact, just the opposite is true. Read the Full Story.....

| their winning ways the very next chance they get. Whether it’s an individual or team sport a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the road, something to learn from, after all nobody is perfect right? In fact often times a loss is viewed as beneficial to a team or individuals’ growth and the rectification of flaws can help strengthen prior short comings. Well fight fans do not adhere to that line of thinking. Today undefeated fighters are often coddled and carefully matched in order to preserve that all important “0”. Over the years I have witnessed many great fighters lose for the first time. Marciano and Mayweather, assuming he retires, are clearly the exception and not the rule. Yet you hear it all the time, you may have said it yourself, “I don’t know if he’ll ever be the same” or “He must not have been that great anyway”. As history has dictated it is not so much the loss itself but how a fighter rebounds from the loss that tells the story. 2007 has given us plenty of reason to speculate on the topic so lets get started….
