Soto for most of the fight to retain his
WBO Jr. Lightweight Title Saturday from
the Borgata Resort & Casino in Atlantic

Joan Guzman used his excellent
counter-punching skills and took
advantage of his much faster hand
speed to control ten out of twelve rounds

AN INTERVIEW WITH LEONARD
ELLERBE
Interview By: John Martinez -
BoxingRealm.com

(19Nov07) Moments ago, I spoke with
WBC welterweight king Floyd
Mayweather Jr.’s adviser and co-trainer
Mr. Leonard Ellerbe. During the Q&A, he
was quick to dispel any thoughts that
Ricky Hatton will still be standing for the
twelfth and final round. In addition to this
prediction, he had a message that Team
Mayweather hopes to get out regarding
the upcoming Presidential elections.

JM: How do you answer critics that say
this fight isn’t worthy of being telecast on
HBO PPV due to Mayweather’s decisive
edge in height, reach, and all around
skill set?

LE: Well first of all, a fight isn’t won on
paper. That is why the two combatants
have to go into the ring and prove
themselves. Floyd is and has been the
best fighter in the world for a number of
years and December 8 will be no
different.

Chapman Cracks Top 10!

24-year-old heavyweight prospect JD
"The Natural" Chapman (28-0, 25 KOs)
has officially cracked the top 10.

The 6' 6" Arkansas-based power
puncher has moved up to #10 in the
WBO's most recent ratings, in addition to
his #13 WBA and #14 WBC rankings.

Manager Scott Hirsch says he's happy
the world sanctioning bodies have been
paying attention to his slugger's steady
improvement. "JD has looked better in
every successive outing and I'm very
happy the world bodies recognized that."

Hirsch says Chapman will be in a
"significant step-up fight" against a
fellow contender, early next year. "We're
looking at dates in Vegas or Dubai," he
explains. "JD has been bowling over
everyone we put in front of him and we
feel he's ready for prime time as of
today."

In his most recent outing, Chapman
destroyed trialhorse Marcus Rhode in
1:20, dropping him three times with his
electric right hand.

“The Brawl” as it was billed, was yet
another good fight for this very resurgent
year in Professional Boxing. Both
fighters showed a real dislike for each
other for the very long promotional
period. One of the reasons for the delay
was that the fight was at a “catch-weight”
of 166lbs. Ricardo Mayorga had to gain
over twenty pounds. Fernando Vargas
had to lose almost one hundred.

Malignaggi punches back at critics
NEW YORK (November 26, 2007) –
International Boxing Federation light
welterweight champion Paulie “The
Magic Man” Malignaggi, rated No. 2 by
The Ring, believes stylish boxing skills
like his are far less appreciated in today’
s knockout-crazed world of boxing than
it's ever been.

“Pure boxers today aren’t as highly
valued as they should be,” the
outspoken Brooklyn pugilist said from
his Vero Beach (FL) training camp.
“Even all-time great boxers like Willie
Pep and Pernall Whitaker, if they were
boxing today, wouldn’t be as
appreciated. Floyd Mayweather is the
best in the world, maybe ever, but critics
complain because he’s so good that, he
wins so easily and isn’t in wars. Now-a-
days everybody wants to see punching,
not boxing skills, and that’s a shame.

On December 1st, live from Foxwoods
Resort and Casino, three champions
put their titles on the line in the season
finale of Showtime Championship
Boxing.  Two respected veterans of the
fight game, Antonio Tarver and Vernon
Forrest, scored impressive victories over
tough yet ill-equipped opponents in
Danny Santiago and Michele Piccirillo.
Nonito Donaire overwhelmed Luis
Maldanado in his first title defense since
upsetting Vic Darchinyan.

All three men entered the ring with
something to prove.  For Tarver and
Forrest an inspiring win would keep
them on track for bigger, more
meaningful fights that would lead to big
paydays, and help cement their status
as two elite fighters of this generation.  A
successful defense for Donaire versus a
tough challenger legitimized his win over
Darchinyan and proved that “The Filipino
Flash” wasn’t “The Filipino Flash” in the
pan.  Three Champions entered,
prevailed, and proved their points with
authority.

James Kirkland improves to 21-0 (18
KOs) with a first round KO over Allen
Conyers in their scheduled ten-round Jr.
Middleweight contest. It was the main
event of ShowTime’s ShoBox series,
which they broadcast live from the
Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez,
California. Gary Shaw Productions
promoted Friday night’s show.

Both fighters attacked each other from
the beginning of the first round wildly.
After thirty seconds had past, Allen
Conyers landed a crushing right to the
head of Kirkland sending him to the
canvas. He was up and ready to go by
the count of eight.

As soon as referee Ray Corona allowed
the two combatants to continue, the war
raged on. Conyers tried to finish Kirkland
off by throwing wild punches from every
angle, but James immediately turned
the fight in his favor by landing solid right
of his own sending Alien Conyers down.
He was up and ready to continue, but
still seemed to be in trouble. His legs
were definitely not 100%.

Malignaggi plays “The Name Game”
The outspoken Brooklyn boxer, rated No.
2 by The Ring, commented on some of
the top welterweights and light
welterweights in the world:

Floyd Mayweather: “The best pound-for-
pound in boxing today, maybe ever. He
dominates and is definitely the smartest
boxer.”

Ricky Hatton: “Workmanlike but a little
overrated. He’s not great but is a good
fighter who is tough and a worker. He’s
overrated in that some believe he’s the
best.”

Miguel Cotto: “One of the best pound-for-
pound fighters in the world today -- very
powerful, strong, hungry and
determined.”

HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 – Junior
middleweight contenders Sechew
Powell and Terrance Cauthen promised
a war in their IBF title elimination bout on
Wednesday night at the Seminole Hard
Rock Live Arena, and both fighters
delivered on their promise.  But when all
was said and done, it was ‘The Iron
Horse’ from Brooklyn, Powell, who had
the last word, dropping Cauthen twice
en route to a spectacular fourth round
TKO win.

“I give Terrance Cauthen a lot of credit
for being a man of his word and
standing and fighting with me,” said
Powell.  “But I was not about to be
denied of my title shot, and no one was
going to stop me last night.”

With the victory, the 28-year old Powell
improved to 22-1 with 13 KOs, and he
now has his sights set on his 2008 shot
at IBF junior middleweight champion
Cory Spinks.

“Winning this fight over Terrance
Cauthen was a great Christmas gift, and
I’m going to celebrate 2008 by taking
home my first world title,” said Powell.
“Cory Spinks is a great fighter and I
respect him a lot, but this is my time and
all that respect will go out the window
when the bell rings.  I can’t wait to fight
him.”

WORLD TITLE SHOT
HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 –
Former world junior welterweight
champion Juan Urango is a changed
man.  That was never more evident than
on Wednesday night, when he
dispatched of 62 fight veteran Marty
Robbins in five rounds to up his record
to 19-1-1 with 15 KOs.

“I’m taking this sport much more
seriously than ever and I plan on ending
every one of my fights from here on out
with a knockout,” said Urango.  “I want
my world title back in 2008 and whoever
I have to beat to get back there, I will.”

The win over Robbins was Urango’s
second since a hard fought decision
loss to Ricky Hatton in January.  After
some soul searching, Urango has left
that fight in the past and only looks
forward to a bright future.

“What’s done is done and I can’t worry
about what happened in January with
Hatton,” said Urango.  “I learned from my
defeat and I have changed the way I
approach the game.  The champions at
the top of this division need to watch out,
because I’m coming for them.”

In a career that spanned from 1956 to 1975, Eddie Perkins engaged in 99
professional fights. He won seventy five of those contests. He met opponents
in over twenty different countries. He truly was a " world " champion.

Ediie lost three of his first five bouts but rallied to win seven straight. In 1958 he
lost to Cleveland, Ohio's Cecil Shorts. He stopped Shorts in a rematch and
then he outscored rugged Franke Ryff. In 1959 Eddie won a decision over Paul
Armstead but lost to Carl Hubbard and was then halted by Al Urbina. It would
be the only stoppage loss of Eddie's career.

1960 was a good year for Perkins as he beat Larry Boardman, Paolo Rosi and
Joey Lopes. In 1961 Perkins lost a verdict to Youngstown, Ohio's L.C. Morgan.
He would bounce right back to outscore the hard hitting Carlos Hernandez.
That would lead to Eddie's first title shot and on October 21st he met defending
WBA junior welterweight champion Dulio Loi in Milan, Italy. After fifteen rounds,
the bout was judged a draw. They would meet again eleven months later and
this time Eddie won the decision and captured his first world title.

Perkins reign lasted only three months as Loi won a decision in their rubber
match. Loi decided to retire and on June 15th, 1963 Eddie won his second title
with a decision over Roberto Cruz for the WBA and WBC titles.

Perkins would defend successfully against Yoshinori Takahashi and the slick
Bunny Grant. He also sqeezed in five non title victories. On January 18, 1965
Eddie lost his crown to Carlos Hernandez. Seven months later he would lose to
future great Jose Napoles.

Eddie was bound and determined to regain his title. He scored an important
win over Kenny Lane but in 1966 he dropped a points call to Lennox Beckles. In
1967 he beat Adolph Pruitt and Paul Armstead but was then outpointed by the
classy Nicolino Locche. Perkins came right back to beat Pruitt again. He
finished the year with a draw against Joao Henrique.

Perkins put together a quiet win streak in 1968 but lost a decision in a rematch
with Henrique. In 1970 Eddie re-established himself as a force to be reckoned
with. He defeated Lion Furuyama, up and coming Clyde Gray and Pedro
Adigue. He then lost a return match to Bunny Grant. Eddie then took out Johann
Orsolics.

In 1971 Eddie defeated future champion Angel Espada but in 1972 he was
upset by Victor Ortiz. In 1973 Eddie put himself in line for a welterweight title
shot as he beat the rough and tough Armando Muniz to win the NABF
welterweight title. Perkins would repeat his victory over Muniz in 1974.

Besides the two losses to Perkins and losses to Zovek Barajas, Marcos
Geraldo and Angel Espada, Muniz was awarded a 1975 title fight with the great
champion Jose Napoles. In Muniz' defense during that time period he did
defeat Ernie Lopez and Hedgemon Lewis. Nevertheless in 1974 Eddie
deserved a title shot especially after a win over Japan's Ryu Sorimachi. That
would be Eddie's last victory. After his failure to win the middleweight title from
Carlos Monzon, Napoles opted to fight a rematch with Hedgemon Lewis. This
left the deserving Perkins out in the cold.

Perkins would lose a decision to future junior middleweight champion Rocky
Mattioli. An aging and discouraged Perkins would then lose verdicts to Maxwell
Malinga and Shoji Tsujimoto. In 1975 Eddie had his last battle loing an eight
rounder in Germany to Franz Czandl.

Perkins met seven world champions and countless contenders in his
distinguished career. He fought anyone, anywhere, anytime. Welcome to the
Hall Of Fame Eddie.
