On December 1st, live from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, three champions put their titles on the line in the season finale of Showtime Championship Boxing. Two respected veterans of the fight game, Antonio Tarver and Vernon Forrest, scored impressive victories over tough yet ill-equipped opponents in Danny Santiago and Michele Piccirillo. Nonito Donaire overwhelmed Luis Maldanado in his first title defense since upsetting Vic Darchinyan. Read the Full Ringside Report.....

James Kirkland improves to 21-0 (18 KOs) with a first round KO over Allen Conyers in their scheduled ten-round Jr. Middleweight contest. It was the main event of ShowTime’s ShoBox series, which they broadcast live from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. Gary Shaw Productions promoted Friday night’s show. Both fighters attacked each other from the beginning of the first round wildly. After thirty seconds had past, Allen Conyers landed a crushing right to the head of Kirkland sending him to the canvas. He was up and ready to go by the count of eight. As soon as referee Ray Corona allowed the two combatants to continue, the war raged on. Conyers tried to finish Kirkland off by throwing wild punches from every angle, but James immediately turned the fight in his favor by landing solid right of his own sending Alien Conyers down. He was up and ready to continue, but still seemed to be in trouble. His legs were definitely not 100%. Read the Full Story.....

Mayweather scores TKO win over Hatton: "Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather keeps his title and remains undefeated
Fight Results By: Phil Santos - Overhandright.com
Floyd Mayweather Jr. kept his perfect record in tact Saturday night by stopping Ricky Hatton in the tenth round of their scheduled twelve round Welterweight Championship fight. The contest was the Main Event of “Undefeated”, which was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and broadcast live from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas by HBO PPV. Ricky Hatton pressed the fight. He was the aggressor for most of the contest. Floyd Mayweather was forced to fight Hatton’s fight and turned out to be the victor. With the MGM Grand Arena, packed with singing British fans, both fighters began the fight by going right after each other. It was obvious from the start that Mayweather had the hand and foot speed, but Ricky was a lot quicker than Floyd may have thought. The first round found both fighters landing punches, mostly to the head of each other. Hatton landed a very solid left to the jaw of Mayweather that clearly stunned him. It was a close round, but on my scorecard, I gave round one to Ricky Hatton. Read the Full Story.....
Mayweather KO’s Hatton In Tenth Article By: Bill Calogero - TheDailysports.com

Floyd Mayweather Jr. pulls out an impressive victory by outlasting and eventually stopping the previously undefeated Ricky Hatton. In what turned out to be a terrific fight with great exchanges and plenty of drama Floyd showed to be the more precise puncher and superior defender. Ricky Hatton did well to take his share of rounds on my scorecard (a view not shared by the judges who had it 89-81, 89-81, 88-82) by mugging Mayweather against the ropes and making the fight a brawl. His early success began to fade by the 7th round or so as Mayweather started picking his shots and visibly stunning Hatton. Read the Full Story.....

Roy Jones Jr. “Tito says it won’t last two rounds. I’m going to be nice and give him two more rounds and beat him in four. Felix Trinidad “Jones and I were suppose to fight during the peaks of our careers. I believed back then that I could beat him and the same holds true today.

Snapshot: 2007 The Year in Boxing By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

Photo By: Tom Casino - Showtime
| Fistic fans had a hell of a good year in 2007. World Champions like JermainTaylor, Vic Darchinyan and Jean Marc Mormeck were overwhelmed and knocked out en route to losing their titles. There were multiple bouts worthy of mention for fight of the year, Vazquez vs. Marquez I & II, Diaz vs. Freitas, Pavlik vs. Taylor, Mosley vs. Cotto, just to name a few. We saw the emergence of new champions, as well as potential stars of the sport, like Nonito Donaire, Kelly Pavlik, Paul Williams and David Haye. Future Hall of Famers Manny Pacquiao, Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather Jr. continued their winning ways and further cemented their place amongst the greatest of all time. | Marquez, Marquez and Taylor: The likelihood of Victory Part I Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com Photo By: Golden Boy Promotions |

With, what should be, two exciting rematches and a rubber match upcoming I got to thinking: Do any of these talented current and former champions have any hope at being victorious? The prospect of Juan Manuel Marquez, Raphael Marquez and Jermain Taylor all losing their next fight seems improbable, until you take a look at their opposition. Both Jermain Taylor and Raphael Marquez tasted defeat by way of knockout in their last fight. For Taylor the loss was his first and for Marquez his first in nearly seven years. The elder Marquez, Juan Manuel, is riding a four fight winning streak with his last two coming over Rocky Juarez and Marco Antonio Barrera. Read the Full Story.....

The fight was billed as “The Perfect Match Up” but nobody could have predicted the battle that ensued. During the fight both combatants hit the canvas, absorbed punishing power shots, and put on a performance that landed the event on most observers short list for “Fight of the Year”. Jermain Taylor had gone from being considered the next great Middleweight, after defeating Bernard Hopkins twice and fighting Winky Wright to a Draw, to being the target of fan and media criticism over a span of less than two years. The fact that Taylor was matched up against blown up Jr. Middleweights with less than average power badly hurt his reputation. What further damaged his credibility was his inability to score a knockout against the likes of Kassim Ouma and Cory Spinks. Read the Full Story.....
In a career that spanned from 1956 to 1975, Eddie Perkins engaged in 99 professional fights. He won seventy five of those contests. He met opponents in over twenty different countries. He truly was a " world " champion. Ediie lost three of his first five bouts but rallied to win seven straight. In 1958 he lost to Cleveland, Ohio's Cecil Shorts. He stopped Shorts in a rematch and then he outscored rugged Franke Ryff. In 1959 Eddie won a decision over Paul Armstead but lost to Carl Hubbard and was then halted by Al Urbina. It would be the only stoppage loss of Eddie's career. Read the Full Story.....

| Edwin Valero improves to 23-0 (23 KOs) with the destruction of Zaid Zavaleta in the third round of their scheduled twelve- round Super Featherweight Championship. The contest was the Main Event of “Night Of Champions” broadcast live on PPV from the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday night. Valero, as he always does, came out aggressive and on the attack. Although he claims to train for twelve round bouts, one would never guess it if they watched him fight. To me, he wants to end the fight as quickly as possible. He was throwing punches from every angle, landing on the head and body of Zaid Zavaleta. Zaid, tried to counter Edwin’s attack by throwing and landing several hard shots to the jaw of Valero, but nothing slowed the Champion down. As the ten-second warning was given, Valero landed a solid left that sent Zavaleta down. He was up at eight, was allowed to continue and the bell sounded to end the first round. | Marquez, Marquez and Taylor: The Likelihood of Victory Part III Raphael Marquez vs. Israel Vazquez By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com Photo By: Tom Casino - Showtime |

Two of the worlds most gifted pound for pound boxers gave us, not one, but two fights worthy of “Fight of the Year” consideration in 2007. A date of March 1st 2008 has been speculated for a third meeting but as of this writing not confirmed. Provided the two are able to get together to cap off a trilogy that, despite the outcome of the third fight, is already a classic. Raphael Marquez and Israel Vazquez should deliver another outstanding performance. Over a total of 13 rounds, a little more than a championship bout, Raphael Marquez and Israel Vazquez brought it for every second. In their first encounter Marquez came out on top, stopping Vazquez, who was unable to continue because of a broken nose, by TKO. Vazquez, despite having to surrender, had his share of highlights in the fight. He floored Marquez with a stiff combo in the 3rd and did good work throughout. Marquez, a natural Bantamweight, Read the Full Story.....
Where does Kelly Pavlik Rank at Super Middleweight? By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

We do not yet know when newly crowned World Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik will make his first title defense. What we do know is that his next bout will be fought at a catch weight of 166, a weight that is more comfortable, after it was well noted that both Pavlik and Taylor were beginning to have difficulty making 160. Kelly Pavlik will step in with Jermain Taylor for their eagerly anticipated rematch on February 16th. Jermain Taylor, the former title holder, and Kelly Pavlik are expected to eventually make the logical move to 168. Read the Full Story.....
Fighters who lost their “0” in 2007: Who Bounces Back and who Falls Flat in 08” By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the sport, or the manner in which fighters are beaten between the ropes, whatever it is one loss in boxing can be more damaging to an athlete than in any other sport. If Roger Federer drops a match he was heavily favored to win, or Tiger Woods fails to win a tournament that everyone knows he should have, sports fans collectively assume that these highly skilled pros will resume their winning ways the very next chance they get. Whether it’s an individual or team sport a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the road, something to learn from, after all nobody is perfect right? In fact often times a loss is viewed as beneficial to a team or individuals’ growth and the rectification of flaws can help strengthen prior short comings. Read the Full Story.....

Mayweather vs. Hatton: After Effects Article By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

| Floyd Mayweather Jr.: “Money” Mayweather remained perfect by knocking out one of the best pound for pound fighters on the planet in Ricky Hatton but did little to silence his critics. Mayweather finds himself in the same situation now as after the De La Hoya fight. He notched another win over a big name opponent (a list which includes Angel Manfredy, Diego Corrales, Jesus Chavez, Jose Luis Castillo (2), Arturo Gatti, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir, Oscar De La Hoya, and now Ricky Hatton) but whether it is questionable match making due to age, weight, or skill level of his challenger “Pretty Boy” will always draw harsh reviews from fans and media alike. | HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 10 - You only have one chance to make a first impression, and Jean Pascal did not impress Edison Miranda this past Friday night during his 10 round bout with Brian Norman at the Bell Center in Montreal. “I came all the way from the sunny weather of San Juan to the snow in Montreal, to watch nothing more than a club fight. They pulled Jean’s opponent right out of the circus to give him an easy night, but it was the opposing clown who stole many rounds away from Jean. If this guy thinks he has any chance in beating Edison Miranda he better go back to school and learn how to fight like a real man. The only thing that impressed me was the wonderful fans of Canada. I admire their desire to see a great fight, but felt bad for them with this disappointing circus event that Pascal delivered. They came out on a snowy cold night and were given nothing to cheer for during this bout. I will ma! ke a promise to these great fans. When Edison Miranda comes back to town they will have a reason to cheer. Listen to me Jean: by the end of the night, you will be lying on the canvas and 15,000 fans will chanting ‘panthère’ (French for Pantera). You are nothing more than a Chinatown boxer.” Pantera and Jean Pascal will again be side by side on Jan 11th on ESPN Friday Night Fights. The event will be broadcast live from the Seminole Hard Rock in Hollywood Florida. |

| HOLLYWOOD, FL December 12 – In the tradition of the classic baseball movie, Field of Dreams, which states, “Build it, and they will come,” fans have responded to the February 23rd world heavyweight title unification bout between IBF champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBO champion Sultan Ibragimov by snapping up tickets for the bout – which will be held at Madison Square Garden in New York City - at a breakneck pace. “We’re ecstatic about the ticket sales so far for Klitschko vs. Ibragimov,” said Leon Margules, Executive Director of Seminole Warriors Boxing. “I think this reaction shows that when you put the two best heavyweights in the world in the ring together, the fans will respond.” “We have priced tickets very reasonably and are on track to sell out the Garden", said Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. | 2007 - WHAT A GREAT YEAR FOR BOXING! What a great year it has been for boxing! On behalf of all the members of the WBC, I would like to congratulate all those involved in this great sport: all the boxers, from four-rounders to world champions, all promoters, managers, trainers, television networks, sanctioning organizations, media, and especially the boxing fans around the world. This year boxing broke all existing records in pay-per-view, paid attendance and great shows in many countries, and most importantly network television is coming back to cover the sport in many countries of the world. Following, you will find the candidates for the WBC’s “Best of” in 2007: FIGHTER OF THE YEAR: Floyd Mayweather, Jr., USA: unquestionable unanimous decision due to his historic battles in 2007, defeating Oscar de la Hoya to win the WBC super welterweight title, and knocking out previously undefeated Ricky Hatton in a WBC welterweight title defense. Floyd has become the superstar of boxing and has found his well-deserved place in history. Read the Full Story..... |
WORLD BOXING COUNCIL NEWS December 20, 2007 – Mexico City From WBC President Jose Sulaiman
Allan Green had to let it go to the scorecards, winning a unanimous ten-round decision over Rubin Williams in their Super Middleweight Bout, which was the Main Event on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights, broadcasted live from the Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino in Tulsa, Oklahoma Friday night. Green, who promised a KO victory had to settle for a ten-round snooze fest instead. Williams displayed a quick, snappy jab, but did not throw enough punches at any time during the bout to win a round on my scorecard. Green, used his jab, followed by solid punches from start to finish to control the fight. The only knockdown came at the close of the ninth round when a stinging left jab landed flush on the jaw of Williams that sent him down. He was up quickly and complained about the ruling, but it was correct. The knockdown was from the punch. One of the judges had it 98-91; the second saw it at 99-89, while the third had it at 99-90, all in favor of Allan Green. TheDailySports.com scored the fight a shutout in favor of Green at 100-89. Green improves to 26-1 (18 KOs) and Rubin Williams drops to 29-3-1 (16 KOs). The fight was boring to say the least. Although it looked good on paper, it was clearly a mis-match. What made things worse in my opinion, Joe T. and Teddy A. could only talk about one thing during the fight…..the fact that Green kept looking at his feet during the bout. Not only did they cause the viewer to watch Green look at his feet too, they had the staff counting the times. I am not sure if they were just as disgusted as I was with the fight or if they really thought that we should all watch Green’s feet instead of the fight. On the under card, Zahir Raheem wanted to win in dramatic fashion and he did just that by landing a crushing left hook to KO Ricardo Dominguez just over a minute into the scheduled eight-round contest. Raheem improves to 29-2 (17 KOs) and Ricardo Dominguez drops to 23-2-2 (15 KOs). Also on the under card, George Tahdooahnippah and James Cook battled to a Majority Draw in their four round middleweight contest. Tahdooahnippah started out strong, but Cook was able to battle back and earn the Draw. One ringside judge saw the fight 39-37 in favor of Tahdooahnippah while the other two scored the fight even at 38-38, resulting in the Majority Draw. George Tahdooahnippah either had not trained for this fight, or he is a very over- rated 9-0-1 (8 KOs) fighter. James Cook, despite the long layoff, came into the bout in the best shape of his pro career and was satisfied with the decision. His record now stands at 10-3-1 (7 KOs). Finally, in the best-televised fight on the card, Carson Jones won a six-round majority decision over Jose Gonzalez in their Jr. Middleweight bout. This fight was non-stop action from the opening bell until the final one. Both fighters seized the chance to be on TV and performed like it. They both came in dry due to the fact that Raheem’s fight had ended so quickly. Gonzalez seemed to be the favorite, but Jones was the local product. The end result was a terrific fight. There were no knockdowns during the bout, but both landed hard shots. Midway through the final round, an unintentional head butt opened up a severe cut over Gonzalez’s eye. The ringside doctor checked it and he was permitted to continue and finish the fight. Two judges scored the fight in Jones’ favor, 57-56 and 58-56 while the third saw it even at 57-57 resulting in the majority decision victory for Carson Jones. Jones improves to 13-5-1 (7 KOs) and Jose Gonzalez loses for only the second time, dropping to 11-2 (9 KOs). It is certain we will see both of these guys in the near future.
