Jean Pascal Survives Scare; Rising Super Middle remains Unbeaten By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

Jean Pascal moves to 21-0 (14) by scoring a UD victory over a game Omar Pittman. The fight began slowly with lots of swings and misses but with Pascal securely in control. With the exception of an off balance slip up, that could have been scored a knockdown; Pascal was cruising winning the first six rounds with relative ease. He had Pittman down in the second, courtesy of a sharp left hook, and he overwhelmed his lesser talented opponent with superior speed and movement. As the 6th round neared its conclusion Pascal held out his arms and taunted Pittman to fight, a move he would soon regret. In the 7th round Pittman smashed Pascal with a right hand, left hook combo that left him wobbly and doing his best to survive the round. Luckily for Pascal, Omar Pittman is not a highly skilled fighter and he just couldn’t find a way to finish. Pascal regained his composure in the 8th; although he was still shaky, and got back to out boxing the over matched Pittman. In studio with ESPN’s Brian Kenney, top rated Super Middleweight, Allan Green gave his take on Jean Pascal stating “Jean Pascal should be locked up for impersonating a fighter”. Green did have more respect for Miranda saying only that the physically gifted Miranda had improvements to make technically.

EDDIE PERKINS ON HIS WAY TO THE HALL OF FAME Article By: Jim Amato
Edwin Valero improves to 23-0 (23 KOs) with the destruction of Zaid Zavaleta in the third round of their scheduled twelve- round Super Featherweight Championship. The contest was the Main Event of “Night Of Champions” broadcast live on PPV from the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday night. Valero, as he always does, came out aggressive and on the attack. Although he claims to train for twelve round bouts, one would never guess it if they watched him fight. To me, he wants to end the fight as quickly as possible. He was throwing punches from every angle, landing on the head and body of Zaid Zavaleta. Read the Full Story.....

Fighters who lost their “0” in 2007: Who Bounces Back and who Falls Flat in 08” By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the sport, or the manner in which fighters are beaten between the ropes, whatever it is one loss in boxing can be more damaging to an athlete than in any other sport. If Roger Federer drops a match he was heavily favored to win, or Tiger Woods fails to win a tournament that everyone knows he should have, sports fans collectively assume that these highly skilled pros will resume their winning ways the very next chance they get. Whether it’s an individual or team sport a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the road, something to learn from, after all nobody is perfect right? In fact often times a loss is viewed as beneficial to a team or individuals’ growth and the rectification of flaws can help strengthen prior short comings. Read the Full Story.....

After reading all the brouhaha and alleged facts spread by the supposed insiders regarding the IBF/WBA, and as of now, WBO undefeated lightweight champion Juan “ Baby Bull” Diaz’s cancelled fight with the promising brawler Michael Katsidis I decided to ask the one man who would definitely know what happened or for that matter what did not happen. His name- Willie Savannah. Willie, manager to the undefeated volume punching Diaz, was more than willing to give his thoughts on the matter and I of course was all to ready to lend my ear for the cause. Savannah was adamant that the fight with Katsidis was the only reason why Team Diaz signed a one-fight extension with Don King. Read the Full Interview.....

Power Plus Potential; What the Fists of Edison Miranda are Loaded with By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
There is nothing a fight fan respects more than a warrior who gives everything he has regardless of the situation or who he is in with. Guys like Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti are admired for more than just their winning records and epic battles. It is their unrelenting will to never give up no matter how much the deck is stacked against them. There is no quit, no cruising to a decision, no knowing when to say when with Edison “Pantera” Miranda. He knows only one speed, he fights only one way, and that is hard and fast inspiring fear in opponents and awe from spectators. Read the Full Story.....
The World Boxing Council donated today the amount of $10,000 ( U.S. ) to the family of the South Korean boxer Yosam Choi, who recently passed away. The decision to make this donation originated with the fact that Yosam Choi was light flyweight world champion recognized by the WBC, and as a way to pay homage to his memory. Choi passed away on January 2, 2008, after going into a coma after the fight in which he defeated Heri Amol by points; another organization´s regional title was on the line in the bout.

Pantera Back with a Bang; Miranda blasts Banks through the Ropes By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
The fight began slowly with David Banks doing what he needed to be effective against such a heavy hitter like Edison Miranda. Banks kept moving, circling to his right, in order to avoid Miranda’s a big right hand. I saw the 1st round to be even with neither man scoring very effectively. No surprise there given the vastly contrasting styles these two brought to the ring. Read the Full Story.....

When they first met Antonio Margarito was already an established champion with four title defenses on his résumé. Kermit Cintron was an undefeated up and comer with 23 knockouts in 24 fights as a pro. Although Margarito held an edge in experience and quality opponents faced it was Cintron who appeared to be the future. Five rounds and four knockdowns later Margarito had erased any doubt as to who the preeminent fighter was. Not only did Margarito drop Cintron four times, and add a serious blemish to his previously perfect record, but he cast a shadow of doubt over the future of the once prized prospect. Since suffering his first, and only, career loss at the hands of Antonio Margarito in 2005, Kermit Cintron has bounced back by rattling off five consecutive victories. Impressively all five wins came by way of knockout and more importantly during that same stretch Cintron captured the vacant IBF title by stopping Mark Suarez. Margarito has fought four times since dominating Cintron, compiling a record of 3-1 (2). His lone defeat came courtesy of Paul Williams and cost Margarito his WBO championship belt. His most noteworthy victory, since beating Cintron, came against Joshua Clottey. Margarito dug himself out of an early hole against Clottey to score a Unanimous Decision. On April 12th Antonio Margarito and Kermit Cintron are scheduled to do it again. Once again their clash will culminate with one fighter leaving the ring a champion and the other leaving many questions as to what their future holds in the sport. This time the roles are reversed, Cintron defends his belt and Margarito seeks the title. Kermit Cintron has constantly had his heart called into question. His poor performance against Margarito coupled with, more recently, his pulling out of a fight with Paul Williams, citing injuries to his hand, have led people to believe that Cintron is more hype than substance. After his last fight, a 10th round knockout win over Jesse Feliciano, Cintron crumpled to the canvas in pain. The power puncher claimed to have hurt his right hand some time during the 1st round. That fight took place on Nov. 23rd, just more than two months ago. Cintron will surely need that hand to be fully healed if he is to stand any chance against Margarito. This fight will determine how history remembers Kermit Cintron. A loss would be disastrous. At 28 years old Cintron needs to be establishing his legacy now if he ever hopes to be considered a great fighter. If he drops another fight to Margarito you can pretty much forget it. In the brutal business that is professional boxing 28 years old is damn near your peak. To think that Cintron could afford to lose this fight and proceed to reclaim championship status is highly implausible. For Margarito the consequences are far less dire. He has had a respectable run as a world champion, including seven successful title defenses, owns an impressive 35-5 (25) record and will most likely be remembered as a heavy handed, iron chinned fighter who spent years of his career being avoided by many of his peers. Yes a loss would be disappointing, but would it be enough to tarnish his legacy? No definitely not. A win on the other hand would mark the beginning of another championship reign for Margarito and would undoubtedly make him relevant, if he isn’t already, in the conversation when discussing the best fighters of his era.
