James Kirkland improves to 21-0 (18
KOs) with a first round KO over Allen
Conyers in their scheduled ten-round Jr.
Middleweight contest. It was the main
event of ShowTime’s ShoBox series,
which they broadcast live from the
Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez,
California. Gary Shaw Productions
promoted Friday night’s show.

Both fighters attacked each other from
the beginning of the first round wildly.
After thirty seconds had past, Allen
Conyers landed a crushing right to the
head of Kirkland sending him to the
canvas. He was up and ready to go by
the count of eight.

As soon as referee Ray Corona allowed
the two combatants to continue, the war
raged on. Conyers tried to finish Kirkland
off by throwing wild punches from every
angle, but James immediately turned
the fight in his favor by landing solid right
of his own sending Alien Conyers down.
He was up and ready to continue, but
still seemed to be in trouble. His legs
were definitely not 100%.

Malignaggi plays “The Name Game”
The outspoken Brooklyn boxer, rated No.
2 by The Ring, commented on some of
the top welterweights and light
welterweights in the world:

Floyd Mayweather: “The best pound-for-
pound in boxing today, maybe ever. He
dominates and is definitely the smartest
boxer.”

Ricky Hatton: “Workmanlike but a little
overrated. He’s not great but is a good
fighter who is tough and a worker. He’s
overrated in that some believe he’s the
best.”

Miguel Cotto: “One of the best pound-for-
pound fighters in the world today -- very
powerful, strong, hungry and
determined.”

HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 –
Former world junior welterweight
champion Juan Urango is a changed
man.  That was never more evident than
on Wednesday night, when he
dispatched of 62 fight veteran Marty
Robbins in five rounds to up his record
to 19-1-1 with 15 KOs.

“I’m taking this sport much more
seriously than ever and I plan on ending
every one of my fights from here on out
with a knockout,” said Urango.  “I want
my world title back in 2008 and whoever
I have to beat to get back there, I will.”

The win over Robbins was Urango’s
second since a hard fought decision
loss to Ricky Hatton in January.  After
some soul searching, Urango has left
that fight in the past and only looks
forward to a bright future.

“What’s done is done and I can’t worry
about what happened in January with
Hatton,” said Urango.  “I learned from my
defeat and I have changed the way I
approach the game.  The champions at
the top of this division need to watch out,
because I’m coming for them.”

Mayweather scores TKO
win over Hatton:
"Pretty Boy" Floyd Mayweather keeps
his title and remains undefeated
Fight Results By: Phil Santos -

Floyd Mayweather Jr. kept his perfect
record in tact Saturday night by stopping
Ricky Hatton in the tenth round of their
scheduled twelve round Welterweight
Championship fight. The contest was
the Main Event of “Undefeated”, which
was promoted by Golden Boy
Promotions and broadcast live from the
MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas by HBO
PPV.

Ricky Hatton pressed the fight. He was
the aggressor for most of the contest.
Floyd Mayweather was forced to fight
Hatton’s fight and turned out to be the
victor.

With the MGM Grand Arena, packed with
singing British fans, both fighters began
the fight by going right after each other. It
was obvious from the start that
Mayweather had the hand and foot
speed, but Ricky was a lot quicker than
Floyd may have thought. The first round
found both fighters landing punches,
mostly to the head of each other. Hatton
landed a very solid left to the jaw of
Mayweather that clearly stunned him. It
was a close round, but on my scorecard,
I gave round one to Ricky Hatton.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. pulls out an
impressive victory by outlasting and
eventually stopping the previously
undefeated Ricky Hatton.  In what turned
out to be a terrific fight with great
exchanges and plenty of drama Floyd
showed to be the more precise puncher
and superior defender.

Ricky Hatton did well to take his share of
rounds on my scorecard (a view not
shared by the judges who had it 89-81,
89-81, 88-82) by mugging

Mayweather against the ropes and
making the fight a brawl.  His early
success began to fade by the 7th round
or so as Mayweather started picking his
shots and visibly  stunning Hatton.

Snapshot: 2007 The Year in Boxing
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

Fistic fans had a hell of a good year in
2007.  World Champions like
JermainTaylor, Vic Darchinyan and Jean
Marc Mormeck were overwhelmed and
knocked out en route to losing their
titles.  There were multiple bouts worthy
of mention for fight of the year, Vazquez
vs. Marquez I & II, Diaz vs. Freitas, Pavlik
vs. Taylor, Mosley vs. Cotto, just to
name a few.

We saw the emergence of new
champions, as well as potential stars of
the sport, like Nonito Donaire, Kelly
Pavlik, Paul Williams and David Haye.
Future Hall of Famers Manny Pacquiao,
Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins and
Floyd Mayweather Jr. continued their
winning ways and further cemented their
place amongst the greatest of all time.

With, what should be, two exciting
rematches and a rubber match
upcoming I got to thinking: Do any of
these talented current and former
champions have any hope at being
victorious?

The prospect of Juan Manuel Marquez,
Raphael Marquez and Jermain Taylor all
losing their next fight seems
improbable, until you take a look at their
opposition.  Both Jermain Taylor and
Raphael Marquez tasted defeat by way of
knockout in their last fight.  For Taylor the
loss was his first and for Marquez his
first in nearly seven years.  The elder
Marquez, Juan Manuel, is riding a four
fight winning streak with his last two
coming over Rocky Juarez and Marco
Antonio Barrera.

The Likelihood of Victory Part II
Kelly Pavlik vs. Jermain Taylor
By: Phil Santos - Overhandright.com
The fight was billed as “The Perfect
Match Up” but nobody could have
predicted the battle that ensued.  During
the fight both combatants hit the canvas,
absorbed punishing power shots,  and
put on a performance that landed the
event on most observers short list for
“Fight of the Year”.

Jermain Taylor had gone from being
considered the next great Middleweight,
after defeating Bernard Hopkins twice
and fighting Winky Wright to a Draw, to
being the target of fan and media
criticism over a span of less than two
years.  The fact that Taylor was matched
up against blown up Jr. Middleweights
with less than average power badly hurt
his reputation.  What further damaged
his credibility was his inability to score a
knockout against the likes of Kassim
Ouma and Cory Spinks.

professional fights. He won seventy five
of those contests. He met opponents in

was a " world " champion.

Ediie lost three of his first five bouts but

He stopped Shorts in a rematch and

was then halted by Al Urbina. It would be
the only stoppage loss of Eddie's career.

Edwin Valero improves to 23-0 (23 KOs)
with the destruction of Zaid Zavaleta in
the third round of their scheduled twelve-
round Super Featherweight
Championship. The contest was the
Main Event of “Night Of Champions”
broadcast live on PPV from the Plaza de
Toros in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday
night.

Valero, as he always does, came out
aggressive and on the attack. Although
he claims to train for twelve round bouts,
one would never guess it if they watched
him fight. To me, he wants to end the
fight as quickly as possible. He was
throwing punches from every angle,
landing on the head and body of Zaid
Zavaleta. Zaid, tried to counter Edwin’s
attack by throwing and landing several
hard shots to the jaw of Valero, but
nothing slowed the Champion down. As
the ten-second warning was given,
Valero landed a solid left that sent
Zavaleta down. He was up at eight, was
allowed to continue and the bell
sounded to end the first round.

The Likelihood of Victory Part III
Raphael Marquez vs. Israel Vazquez
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Photo By: Tom Casino - Showtime
Two of the worlds most gifted pound for
pound boxers gave us, not one, but two
fights worthy of “Fight of the Year”
consideration in 2007.  A date of March
1st 2008 has been speculated for a third
meeting but as of this writing not
confirmed.  Provided the two are able to
get together to cap off a trilogy that,
despite the outcome of
the third fight, is already a classic.
Raphael Marquez and Israel Vazquez
should deliver another outstanding
performance.

Over a total of 13 rounds, a little more
than a championship bout, Raphael
Marquez and Israel Vazquez brought it
for every second.  In their first encounter
Marquez came out on top, stopping
Vazquez, who was unable to continue
because of a broken nose, by TKO.
Vazquez, despite having to surrender,
had his share of highlights in the fight.
He floored Marquez with a stiff combo in
the 3rd and did good work throughout.
Marquez, a natural Bantamweight,

Where does Kelly Pavlik Rank at
Super Middleweight?
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
We do not yet know when newly crowned
World Middleweight Champion Kelly
Pavlik will make his first title defense.
What we do know is that his next bout
will be fought at a catch weight of 166, a
weight that is more comfortable, after it
was well noted that both Pavlik and
Taylor were beginning to have difficulty
making 160.  Kelly Pavlik will step in with
Jermain Taylor for their eagerly
anticipated rematch on February 16th.
Jermain Taylor, the former title holder,
and Kelly Pavlik are expected to
eventually make the logical move to 168.

Fighters who lost their “0” in 2007:
Who Bounces Back
and who Falls Flat in 08”
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the
sport, or the manner in which fighters
are beaten between the ropes, whatever
it is one loss in boxing can be more
damaging to an athlete than in any other
sport.

If Roger Federer drops a match he was
heavily favored to win, or Tiger Woods
fails to win a tournament that everyone
knows he should have, sports fans
collectively assume that these highly
skilled pros will resume their winning
ways the very next chance they get.
Whether it’s an individual or team sport
a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the
road, something to learn from, after all
nobody is perfect right?  In fact often
times a loss is viewed as beneficial to a
team or individuals’ growth and the
rectification of flaws can help strengthen
prior short comings.

Like a crowd-pleasing boxer that never
takes a backward step, SHOWTIME will
come out swinging in 2008 with back to

The night before, Friday, Jan. 4, the
talented, undefeated, world-ranked

Washington, D.C., face dangerous
assignments in the 10-round
co-featured bouts on the 2008 premiere

Mayweather vs. Hatton: After Effects
Article By: Phil Santos –
Overhandright.com
Floyd Mayweather Jr.:  “Money”
Mayweather remained perfect by
knocking out one of the best pound for
pound fighters on the planet in Ricky
Hatton but did little to silence his critics.
Mayweather finds himself in the same
situation now as after the De La Hoya
fight.  He notched another win over a big
name opponent (a list which includes
Angel Manfredy, Diego Corrales, Jesus
Chavez, Jose Luis Castillo (2), Arturo
Gatti, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir,
Oscar De La Hoya, and now Ricky
Hatton) but whether it is questionable
match making due to age, weight, or
skill level of his challenger “Pretty Boy”
will always draw harsh reviews from
fans and media alike.

HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 10 - You
only have one chance to make a first
impression, and Jean Pascal did not
impress Edison Miranda this past Friday
night during his 10 round bout with Brian
Norman at the Bell Center in Montreal.  “I
came all the way from the sunny weather
of San Juan to the snow in Montreal, to
watch nothing more than a club fight.
They pulled Jean’s opponent right out of
the circus to give him an easy night, but
it was the opposing clown who stole
many rounds away from Jean.

If this guy thinks he has any chance in
beating Edison Miranda he better go
back to school and learn how to fight like
a real man.  The only thing that
impressed me was the wonderful fans
of Canada. I admire their desire to see a
great fight, but felt bad for them with this
disappointing circus event that Pascal
delivered.  They came out on a snowy
cold night and were given nothing to
cheer for during this bout.  I will ma! ke a
promise to these great fans.  When
Edison Miranda comes back to town
they will have a reason to cheer.  Listen
to me Jean: by the end of the night, you
will be lying on the canvas and 15,000
fans will chanting ‘panthère’ (French for
Pantera).  You are nothing more than a
Chinatown boxer.”

Pantera and Jean Pascal will again be

broadcast live from the Seminole Hard

LAMONT & ANTHONY PETERSON,
ANTONIO MESQUITA & JOSE ANTONIO IZQUIERDO
Thursday, Jan. 3 2008, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Biloxi, Miss.
“SHOBOX: THE NEW GENERATION’’
Friday, Jan. 4; Telecast Begins at 11 p.m. ET/PT
One night before Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi defends his IBF junior
welterweight title against top-ranked Herman Ngoudjo on SHOWTIME
CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING, undefeated, world-ranked Anthony and  Lamont
Peterson will be co-featured in 10-round bouts on ShoBox: The New
Generation Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, on SHOWTIME (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the
west coast).

Lamont (23-0, 11 KOs), who is ranked No. 3 in the WBO and No. 6 in the WBA
at 140 pounds, will face fellow unbeaten Antonio Mesquita (34-0, 27 KOs), a
Brazilian now residing in Las Vegas.

Anthony (25-0, 18 KOs), a lightweight who is ranked No. 1 in the WBO, No. 4 in
the WBC and No. 12 in the IBF, will meet Jose Antonio Izquierdo (16-1-1, 13
KOs) of Chihuahua, Mexico, by way of Pinar Del Rio, Cuba. Izquierdo, who
easily defeated Nick Casal in his last ShoBox appearance, is a replacement for
Guadalupe Rosales, who withdrew due to illness.

NOTE: THURSDAY’S WEIGHTS – Lamont Peterson 142¾ pounds, Mesquita
142¾ pounds, Anthony Peterson 135¾ pounds, Izquierdo 135¾ pounds.

LAMONT PETERSON

“On paper, this looks to be my toughest fight, but that remains to be seen. I
know Mesquita has a very strong right hand that he throws in different ways, so
that is something I want to take away or at least smother and neutralize. If I can
shrink his range, which I plan to do, I will nullify it entirely.

“No way, he will outspeed me. But there is no way I will look past him either.
There is too much at stake in every fight I have now to underestimate any
opponent. People look at me as a boxer and Anthony as a puncher, but I am
willing to mix if I have to.

“This is going to be a great fight between two undefeated fighters. One “O” has
to go, but I have prepared very well and am confident it will not be mine.’’

ANTONIO MESQUITA

“I have a violent, third-world country style and you will see that. I look to engage
and knock your head off. You hit me, I hit you back 10 times. I never watch tapes
of my opponents, but I know Peterson has a lot of movement. I don’t think this
will be my toughest fight. I am bigger and stronger than he is.

“All fights are very important, but this one, being on SHOWTIME against a well-
known, up and coming fighter is special and a great opportunity for me. I’ve had
a couple major fights scheduled, but they always fell through. I am excited that
this fight is a go.’’

ANTHONY PETERSON

“Fighting a guy on short notice doesn’t really change anything other than I may
be a little more patient early on before I break him down when we hit the
stretch. At some point, he is going to have to fight and show me what he’s all
about.

“What he does or doesn’t do is not something I am concerned with. He is going
to have to deal with me.

“I feel great and am excited about fighting again on SHOWTIME. I think you’ll
see that I am more than just a puncher and that I have the entire arsenal.

“I respect all my opponents, but I am coming to dominate and put on a good
show.’’

JOSE ANTONIO IZQUIERDO

“I had a fight cancelled in early December but I never stopped training. Then, I
thought I might be fighting on another card this week, but that was never 100
percent so when this opportunity came up, I took it.

“I have never seen Anthony Peterson but I am ready to fight and am very
confident. A victory over a highly ranked fighter will get me right back on track.

“I don’t think people expected me to beat Casal, but I dominated him. I am
ready to do whatever I have to do to win this fight, whether it means box, brawl
or do both. I am really looking forward to Friday night.’’
