| Chapman Cracks Top 10! 24-year-old heavyweight prospect JD "The Natural" Chapman (28-0, 25 KOs) has officially cracked the top 10. The 6' 6" Arkansas-based power puncher has moved up to #10 in the WBO's most recent ratings, in addition to his #13 WBA and #14 WBC rankings. Manager Scott Hirsch says he's happy the world sanctioning bodies have been paying attention to his slugger's steady improvement. "JD has looked better in every successive outing and I'm very happy the world bodies recognized that." | On December 1st, live from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, three champions put their titles on the line in the season finale of Showtime Championship Boxing. Two respected veterans of the fight game, Antonio Tarver and Vernon Forrest, scored impressive victories over tough yet ill-equipped opponents in Danny Santiago and Michele Piccirillo. Nonito Donaire overwhelmed Luis Maldanado in his first title defense since upsetting Vic Darchinyan. All three men entered the ring with something to prove. For Tarver and Forrest an inspiring win would keep them on track for bigger, more meaningful fights that would lead to big paydays, and help cement their status as two elite fighters of this generation. | James Kirkland improves to 21-0 (18 KOs) with a first round KO over Allen Conyers in their scheduled ten-round Jr. Middleweight contest. It was the main event of ShowTime’s ShoBox series, which they broadcast live from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. Gary Shaw Productions promoted Friday night’s show. Both fighters attacked each other from the beginning of the first round wildly. After thirty seconds had past, Allen Conyers landed a crushing right to the head of Kirkland sending him to the canvas. He was up and ready to go by the count of eight. As soon as referee Ray Corona allowed the two combatants to continue, the war raged on. Conyers tried to finish Kirkland off by throwing wild punches from every angle, but James immediately turned the fight in his favor by landing solid right of his own sending Alien Conyers down. | HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 – Junior middleweight contenders Sechew Powell and Terrance Cauthen promised a war in their IBF title elimination bout on Wednesday night at the Seminole Hard Rock Live Arena, and both fighters delivered on their promise. But when all was said and done, it was ‘The Iron Horse’ from Brooklyn, Powell, who had the last word, dropping Cauthen twice en route to a spectacular fourth round TKO win. “I give Terrance Cauthen a lot of credit for being a man of his word and standing and fighting with me,” said Powell. “But I was not about to be denied of my title shot, and no one was going to stop me last night.” With the victory, the 28-year old Powell improved to 22-1 with 13 KOs, and he now has his sights set on his 2008 shot at IBF junior middleweight champion Cory Spinks. “Winning this fight over Terrance Cauthen was a great Christmas gift, and I’m going to celebrate 2008 by taking home my first world title,” said Powell. “Cory Spinks is a great fighter and I respect him a lot, but this is my time and all that respect will go out the window when the bell rings. | HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 – Former world junior welterweight champion Juan Urango is a changed man. That was never more evident than on Wednesday night, when he dispatched of 62 fight veteran Marty Robbins in five rounds to up his record to 19-1-1 with 15 KOs. “I’m taking this sport much more seriously than ever and I plan on ending every one of my fights from here on out with a knockout,” said Urango. “I want my world title back in 2008 and whoever I have to beat to get back there, I will.” The win over Robbins was Urango’s second since a hard fought decision loss to Ricky Hatton in January. After some soul searching, Urango has left that fight in the past and only looks forward to a bright future. “What’s done is done and I can’t worry about what happened in January with Hatton,” said Urango. “I learned from my defeat and I have changed the way I approach the game. | After a week of pre-fight publicity that saw them hold a press conference in Los Angeles and attend a sold out championship soccer match South of the Border, WBC featherweight champion Jorge "Nino de Oro" Linares and WBA super featherweight champion Edwin "El Aniquilador" Valero are now ready to meet their respective opponents this Saturday, December 15, 2007 at Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico. Co-headlining this massive card, fellow Venezuelans Linares and Valero are making the trip from Japan, where they now reside, fighting for Teiken Promotions, co-promoter of the Plaza de Toros event, billed as "Night of Champions - Fists of Iron", along with Promociones Jose "Pepe" Gomez, DiBella Entertainment and All Star Boxing. Linares, 24-0 (15), won the vacant WBC feather crown with a masterful tenth round stoppage against longtime WBC super bantam kingpin Oscar Larios at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas this past July. The lanky 22 year old turned pro five years ago in Osaka, Japan and has since used his razor sharp boxing skills to turn back all 24 men who have opposed him in the squared circle. Facing Linares on Saturday in Cancun is former WBC FECARBOX and NABF featherweight titlist Gamaliel Diaz, 22-6-2 (9). The 26 year old from Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico was baptized by fire early in his career, thrown in with the likes of future championship level competitors Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz and Martin Honorio, going 3-5 in his first eight bouts. Diaz then went on a tear, going on a 17-0-2 run over the next five years, including a thrilling split decision verdict over Robert "The Ghost" Guerrero in June, 2006 to take the NABF title. "El Platano" was stopped in the sixth during the rematch with Guerrero, who has since gone on to win the IBF crown twice, but Diaz got right back on track and heads into this WBC title bout with Linares on the strength of handing top American prospect Elio Rojas his first defeat in 20 contests. The world's hardest punching fighter, WBA super feather champion Edwin "El Aniquilador" Valero, 22-0 (22), will place his 130 lb strap at risk against rugged Mexico City based campaigner, Zaid "El Exterminador" Zavaleta, 16-2-2 (11). Valero, a southpaw, began his career with a world record 18 consecutive first round knockouts, annhilating opponents during a world tour that saw him fight in Venezuela, America, Argentina, Panama, Japan and France. In August of last year, Valero got off the canvas and stopped reigning WBA titlist Vincente "El Loco" Mosquera of Panama in the tenth round to win the super feather crown that he has since defended in 2007 with successive early finishes of Michael Lozada and Nobuhito Honmo. Saturday night's challenger Zavaleta has never been stopped in his four year pro career and the steel chinned 28 year old has vowed to put a stop to Valero's reign of terror, walking out of the Plaza de Toros with the WBA belt around his waist in the process. Chief undercard support is the hotly anticipated rematch between featherweights Rodolfo Lopez, 20-4-1 (14), and Naoki Matsuda, 28-7-3 (11), scheduled over twelve rounds. In March of this year, Cancun based former WBC feather champ Lopez canvased Matsuda in the first round but the 31 year old Tokyo man roared back to gun down Lopez in the fifth for his thirteenth straight win.
