The fight was the Main Event of Top Rank Inc.’ s “Fight Night” and was broadcast live from the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania on the Versus Network. Lawrence was a very late sub for this fight. He was coming off a win only days earlier and hadn’t been in the gym. | Chapman Cracks Top 10! 24-year-old heavyweight prospect JD "The Natural" Chapman (28-0, 25 KOs) has officially cracked the top 10. The 6' 6" Arkansas-based power puncher has moved up to #10 in the WBO's most recent ratings, in addition to his #13 WBA and #14 WBC rankings. Manager Scott Hirsch says he's happy the world sanctioning bodies have been paying attention to his slugger's steady improvement. "JD has looked better in every successive outing and I'm very happy the world bodies recognized that." Hirsch says Chapman will be in a "significant step-up fight" against a fellow contender, early next year. "We're looking at dates in Vegas or Dubai," he explains. | On December 1st, live from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, three champions put their titles on the line in the season finale of Showtime Championship Boxing. Two respected veterans of the fight game, Antonio Tarver and Vernon Forrest, scored impressive victories over tough yet ill-equipped opponents in Danny Santiago and Michele Piccirillo. Nonito Donaire overwhelmed Luis Maldanado in his first title defense since upsetting Vic Darchinyan. All three men entered the ring with something to prove. For Tarver and Forrest an inspiring win would keep them on track for bigger, more meaningful fights that would lead to big paydays, and help cement their status as two elite fighters of this generation. | James Kirkland improves to 21-0 (18 KOs) with a first round KO over Allen Conyers in their scheduled ten-round Jr. Middleweight contest. It was the main event of ShowTime’s ShoBox series, which they broadcast live from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. Gary Shaw Productions promoted Friday night’s show. Both fighters attacked each other from the beginning of the first round wildly. After thirty seconds had past, Allen Conyers landed a crushing right to the head of Kirkland sending him to the canvas. He was up and ready to go by the count of eight. As soon as referee Ray Corona allowed the two combatants to continue, the war raged on. Conyers tried to finish Kirkland off by throwing wild punches from every angle, but James immediately turned the fight in his favor by landing solid right of his own sending Alien Conyers down. | HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 – Former world junior welterweight champion Juan Urango is a changed man. That was never more evident than on Wednesday night, when he dispatched of 62 fight veteran Marty Robbins in five rounds to up his record to 19-1-1 with 15 KOs. “I’m taking this sport much more seriously than ever and I plan on ending every one of my fights from here on out with a knockout,” said Urango. “I want my world title back in 2008 and whoever I have to beat to get back there, I will.” The win over Robbins was Urango’s second since a hard fought decision loss to Ricky Hatton in January. After some soul searching, Urango has left that fight in the past and only looks forward to a bright future. “What’s done is done and I can’t worry about what happened in January with Hatton,” said Urango. “I learned from my defeat and I have changed the way I approach the game. | improbable, until you take a look at their opposition. Both Jermain Taylor and Raphael Marquez tasted defeat by way of knockout in their last fight. For Taylor the loss was his first and for Marquez his first in nearly seven years. The elder Marquez, Juan Manuel, is riding a four fight winning streak with his last two coming over Rocky Juarez and Marco Antonio Barrera. Juan Manuel Marquez faces the buzz saw that is Manny Pacquiao in a bout scheduled to take place on March 15, 2008. Marquez has been here before, he’ s tasted the power of Pacquiao, and he has withstood his relentless pressure. While he did not emerge victorious he did get off the canvas three times in the 1st round to force a Draw. That Marquez didn’t quit, or simply wilt under the pressure, could be seen as a victory in itself. And Maybe, just maybe, the fact that he was able to win enough late rounds to earn a Draw means that he somehow figured out one of the worlds most electric fighters and now possesses the know how to defeat him. Pacquiao/Marquez is the fight that makes the most sense for both men. Aside from a close UD loss to Erik Morales, Juan Manuel is the only fighter to give Pacquiao a run for his money in the last five years. Both combatants recently won relatively easy Decisions over future Hall of Famer Marco Antonio Barrera. So it’s fair to say Marquez and Pacquiao are the best 130 pound fighters on the planet, this is no mismatch, but when it comes right down to it Manny Pacquiao is one of the best fighters on the planet period. Marquez should definitely test Manny more than once but I see Pacquiao by late TKO or Decision. For Marquez to win he must somehow keep Pacquiao off balance with timed attacks and constant movement. A decision victory could be won, but Marquez would have to be perfect and perfection against Pacquiao is rare. If he is lulled into a stand and trade disaster surely awaits Marquez who has only 2 knockouts in his last nine fights. Likelihood of Victory: Juan Manuel Marquez chances of victory are slim however; you should see an exciting fight, between two terrific fighters. |
