| Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the sport, or the manner in which fighters are beaten between the ropes, whatever it is one loss in boxing can be more damaging to an athlete than in any other sport. If Roger Federer drops a match he was heavily favored to win, or Tiger Woods fails to win a tournament that everyone knows he should have, sports fans collectively assume that these highly skilled pros will resume their winning ways the very next chance they get. Whether it’s an individual or team sport a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the road, something to learn from, after all nobody is perfect right? | After reading all the brouhaha and alleged facts spread by the supposed insiders regarding the IBF/WBA, and as of now, WBO undefeated lightweight champion Juan “ Baby Bull” Diaz’s cancelled fight with the promising brawler Michael Katsidis I decided to ask the one man who would definitely know what happened or for that matter what did not happen. His name- Willie Savannah. Willie, manager to the undefeated volume punching Diaz, was more than willing to give his thoughts on the matter and I of course was all to ready to lend my ear for the cause. | The fight began slowly with David Banks doing what he needed to be effective against such a heavy hitter like Edison Miranda. Banks kept moving, circling to his right, in order to avoid Miranda’s a big right hand. I saw the 1st round to be even with neither man scoring very effectively. These guys are simply not at my level.” I caught up with the punishing power puncher Edison Miranda following his sensational knockout of David Banks on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. As always Miranda pulled no punches, so to speak, as he gave me his take on a second fight with Pavlik, his thoughts on Jeff Lacy and Sakio Bika and what a typical day of training entails. The once top rated Middleweight contender now inhabits the Super Middleweight division. And make no mistake about it he wants to fight the best the division has to offer. | When they first met Antonio Margarito was already an established champion with four title defenses on his résumé. Kermit Cintron was an undefeated up and comer with 23 knockouts in 24 fights as a pro. Although Margarito held an edge in experience and quality opponents faced it was Cintron who appeared to be the future. Five rounds and four knockdowns later Margarito had erased any doubt as to who the preeminent fighter was. Not only did Margarito drop Cintron four times, and add a serious blemish to his previously perfect record, but he cast a shadow of doubt over the future of the once prized prospect. Since suffering his first, and only, career loss at the hands of Antonio Margarito in 2005, Kermit Cintron has bounced back by rattling off five consecutive victories. | HARTFORD (February 6, 2008) - Former world lightweight title challenger Israel 'Pito' Cardona has become a gatekeeper of the welterweight division since returning to the ring nearly two years ago after being retired 3 1/2-years. Hartford-native Cardona (36-8, 28 KOs), now 33, heads north of the border for a 10-round test in the main event Saturday night at the Montreal Casino against unbeaten prospect Antonio Decarie (17-0, 5 KOs), the 25-year-old former Canadian light welterweight champion. 'Pito' won his first 24 pro fights, 18 by knockout, including an IBO super featherweight winning performance against Jeff Mayweather and Cardona later defeated Steve Larrimore for the IBO light welterweight crown. In 1997, 'Pito' stopped 'Mighty' Ivan Robinson (23-1) in the third round of their USBA lightweight title bout and three fights later, Robinson beat Arturo Gatti for the first of two times in their 1998 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year. | No chance. Essentially that is what former Middleweight champion Jermain Taylor has been given in his rematch against current top dog Kelly Pavlik. Since besting future Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins twice and fighting Winky Wright to a draw Taylor has seen his stock plummet. Fairly or not Taylor has faced plenty of criticism. | Andre Berto continues to impress by stopping Michel Trabant. Trabant, who had never been stopped, quit on his stool following the conclusion of round six. Berto snapped off nasty body shots and stinging jabs throughout all six rounds befuddling Trabant who consistently failed to let his hands go. The punctuation of Berto’s attack came in the 3rd round when Berto scored numerous vicious uppercuts. It became clear early as to why Trabant had never previously been knocked out. | What a fight! Fans saw straight up action from start to finish. Paul Williams was punished early by Carlos Quintana power shots before settling down and out boxing the determined Quintana during the middle rounds. Just when it appeared that Quintana may be fading, under the pressure of the long armed champion, he proceeded to pound left hooks into Williams’ brow. | In an interesting match-up that had the potential to shake things up in the Cruiserweight division, Darnell “Ding a Ling Man” Wilson, 22-5-3 (19), took on the undefeated B.J. Flores, 20-0-1 (13). Wilson the current USBA Cruiserweight champion and the #9 rated Cruiser by The Ring Magazine was looking to continue his assent up the rankings by dominating the untested Flores. | It was everything we hoped for and more than we should have expected. Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez proved once again to be incredible fighters and true champions with yet another amazing performance. The perceived heavier hitter in Vazquez hit the canvas and was visibly shaken more than once and the slicker boxer in Marquez appeared to be landing the more solid shots. Much like their two previous meetings just when you thought one fighter was taking control the other man came back to shift the momentum. The early rounds were defined by Marquez’s jab which he used to control the tempo of the fight and keep Vazquez from planting and effectively shooting his left hook. The back and forth action resulted in Marquez and Vazquez trading the first three rounds on my card with Marquez taking the 1st and the 3rd. The first, of what would be many, pivotal moment of the bout came in the 4th when Marquez stunned Vazquez with a straight right hand followed by a quick flurry landing the defending champion on the canvas. Vazquez rose to his feet and Marquez pounced in anticipation of finishing Vazquez off and just as if it was scripted Vazquez fired back vicious counters stopping Marquez in his path and doing enough damage to halt the challengers’ advances. Marquez boxed beautifully for the next two rounds capturing the 5th and 6th on my card. His right hand was beginning to land with frequency and Vazquez face was looking worse for wear as the fight wore on. Vazquez had decent success on the inside but he wasn’t as forceful as expected during the close exchanges. Rounds 7 thru 9 were property of Israel Vazquez. Marquez did well to fend off the busier Vazquez with well timed counters and often fired off flurries to end the rounds however Vazquez was more aggressive and consistent. Just as the 9th round was nearing its conclusion Vazquez slammed Marquez with a brutal combo punctuated by a hard right hand that wobbled Marquez. With only seconds left Vazquez didn’t have enough time to capitalize and had to settle for a 10-9 round. The second crucial moment of the fight came in round 10 when after repeated warnings Rafael Marquez was deducted a point for a very questionable, seemingly beltline, low blow. Upon second look at the punch it truly did appear to be square on the belt of Israel Vazquez and in such a close, significant fight probably should not have been called. Following the fight referee Pat Russell offered no apologies and said that he made the call due to repeated warnings. Vazquez now looked to be gaining control and outworked the slowly fading Marquez. Just as in previous rounds both men emptied their tanks with wicked exchanges before the bell. Vazquez controlled the majority of the action and therefore was awarded the round on my card. The final critical, and perhaps most decisive, moment came at the end of the 12th round. Israel Vazquez was intent on closing the show with a bang and came out in the final round like a man possessed. Marquez did his best to survive and it looked like he would until Vazquez peppered him with a double right hand followed by a left that sent Marquez stumbling backward into the ropes for a knockdown. Vazquez endless stamina and will to come back helped him retain his title in the early favorite for fight of the year. Vazquez vs. Marquez IV anybody? Now I’m just being greedy. My scorecard read 113-112 in favor of Israel Vazquez while the judges saw it 114-111 for Vazquez, 114-111 for Marquez and 113-112 for Vazquez. With the victory Israel Vazquez retains his WBC Super Bantamweight Title and improves to 43-4 (31). Rafael Marquez drops to 37-5 (33). |
