Jean Pascal Survives Scare; Rising Super Middle remains Unbeaten By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

Jean Pascal moves to 21-0 (14) by scoring a UD victory over a game Omar Pittman. The fight began slowly with lots of swings and misses but with Pascal securely in control. With the exception of an off balance slip up, that could have been scored a knockdown; Pascal was cruising winning the first six rounds with relative ease. He had Pittman down in the second, courtesy of a sharp left hook, and he overwhelmed his lesser talented opponent with superior speed and movement. As the 6th round neared its conclusion Pascal held out his arms and taunted Pittman to fight, a move he would soon regret. In the 7th round Pittman smashed Pascal with a right hand, left hook combo that left him wobbly and doing his best to survive the round. Luckily for Pascal, Omar Pittman is not a highly skilled fighter and he just couldn’t find a way to finish. Pascal regained his composure in the 8th; although he was still shaky, and got back to out boxing the over matched Pittman. In studio with ESPN’s Brian Kenney, top rated Super Middleweight, Allan Green gave his take on Jean Pascal stating “Jean Pascal should be locked up for impersonating a fighter”. Green did have more respect for Miranda saying only that the physically gifted Miranda had improvements to make technically.

In a career that spanned from 1956 to 1975, Eddie Perkins engaged in 99 professional fights. He won seventy five of those contests. He met opponents in over twenty different countries. He truly was a " world " champion. Ediie lost three of his first five bouts but rallied to win seven straight. In 1958 he lost to Cleveland, Ohio's Cecil Shorts. He stopped Shorts in a rematch and then he outscored rugged Franke Ryff. In 1959 Eddie won a decision over Paul Armstead but lost to Carl Hubbard and was then halted by Al Urbina. It would be the only stoppage loss of Eddie's career. Read the Full Story.....

| Edwin Valero improves to 23-0 (23 KOs) with the destruction of Zaid Zavaleta in the third round of their scheduled twelve- round Super Featherweight Championship. The contest was the Main Event of “Night Of Champions” broadcast live on PPV from the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday night. Valero, as he always does, came out aggressive and on the attack. Although he claims to train for twelve round bouts, one would never guess it if they watched him fight. To me, he wants to end the fight as quickly as possible. He was throwing punches from every angle, landing on the head and body of Zaid Zavaleta. Zaid, tried to counter Edwin’s attack by throwing and landing several hard shots to the jaw of Valero, but nothing slowed the Champion down. As the ten-second warning was given, Valero landed a solid left that sent Zavaleta down. He was up at eight, was allowed to continue and the bell sounded to end the first round. | Fighters who lost their “0” in 2007: Who Bounces Back and who Falls Flat in 08” By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com |
Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the sport, or the manner in which fighters are beaten between the ropes, whatever it is one loss in boxing can be more damaging to an athlete than in any other sport. If Roger Federer drops a match he was heavily favored to win, or Tiger Woods fails to win a tournament that everyone knows he should have, sports fans collectively assume that these highly skilled pros will resume their winning ways the very next chance they get. Whether it’s an individual or team sport a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the road, something to learn from, after all nobody is perfect right? In fact often times a loss is viewed as beneficial to a team or individuals’ growth and the rectification of flaws can help strengthen prior short comings. Read the Full Story.....

Power Plus Potential; What the Fists of Edison Miranda are Loaded with By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
There is nothing a fight fan respects more than a warrior who gives everything he has regardless of the situation or who he is in with. Guys like Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti are admired for more than just their winning records and epic battles. It is their unrelenting will to never give up no matter how much the deck is stacked against them. There is no quit, no cruising to a decision, no knowing when to say when with Edison “Pantera” Miranda. He knows only one speed, he fights only one way, and that is hard and fast inspiring fear in opponents and awe from spectators. Read the Full Story.....
The World Boxing Council donated today the amount of $10,000 ( U.S. ) to the family of the South Korean boxer Yosam Choi, who recently passed away. The decision to make this donation originated with the fact that Yosam Choi was light flyweight world champion recognized by the WBC, and as a way to pay homage to his memory. Choi passed away on January 2, 2008, after going into a coma after the fight in which he defeated Heri Amol by points; another organization´s regional title was on the line in the bout.

Pantera Back with a Bang; Miranda blasts Banks through the Ropes By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
The fight began slowly with David Banks doing what he needed to be effective against such a heavy hitter like Edison Miranda. Banks kept moving, circling to his right, in order to avoid Miranda’s a big right hand. I saw the 1st round to be even with neither man scoring very effectively. No surprise there given the vastly contrasting styles these two brought to the ring. Read the Full Story.....

VERO BEACH, Florida (January 29, 2008) – Unbeaten super middleweight prospect James McGirt, Jr. (18-0, 9 KOs) and his father/trainer, James “Buddy” McGirt (73-6-1, 48 KOs), former two-time world champion and 2002 Trainer of the Year, are on a special mission together. The McGirts, born and raised in Brentwood (NY) but now living and training in Vero Beach (FL), are trying to become what is believed to be the first family in boxing to feature father-son world champions with the former working his “blood” son’s corner as head trainer when the latter captures a major world title. Two-time world heavyweight title-holder (1956-59, 1960-62) Floyd Patterson was the head trainer of his adopted son, Tracy Harris Patterson, who won the world super bantamweight (1992-94) and super featherweight champ (1995). “That’s our mission,” James explained. “Even though we train everyday for my next fight, becoming world champion has never left my side. We’re working hard to make history. Without a doubt I’m preparing to be world champion. My father was a world champion and I’ve sparred with many world champions. Those experiences have helped me so much; I feed off of it. I haven’t won a world title but being around the sport for so long, I’ve been surrounded by world champions and top contenders. I’ve loved boxing since I was a little kid.” McGirt has gradually moved up in the ratings, currently No. 26 in the WBC, as well as No. 8 by the USBA, No. 9 by the NABF, No. 14 by the NABO and No. 15 by the NABA. “I’m in the gym sparring with world champions and, even though I know sparring isn’t like fighting, I hold my own,” James added. “I’m strong, calm and relaxed. Making 168 (pounds) is so much easier than fighting as a middleweight. The extra 5-8 pounds makes it so much easier on my body. I’ll be fighting 10-rounders this year and I should get a title shot next year. My father and I are going to make history.” McGirt’s manager, Dennis Witherow, believes James will make history. “If you watch these two (James and Buddy) in the training and spend time with them in the gym,” Witherow remarked,” you can feel something special. “We have put together Team McGirt like a business plan. We’ve found the best chemistry for all facets of this business. It started with us find the right promoter, Lou DiBella, who has been great helping us guide us to where we need to be. We have the right chemistry in our corner for each and every fight. As part of our plan, we now have James working with a strength-and-conditioning coach. “Then, of course, you have Buddy as James’ head trainer. I want to repeat that – Buddy is James’ trainer. Yes, he is his father, but in the gym and in this sport, Buddy knows his job is to train his fighters to the best of their ability. That is exactly what he does with James. In this sport there is a tremendous value when a trainer can identify the natural talents of his fighter and then expand as well as build those talents. Buddy has done that with James, who is a very talented boxer. He has great boxing skills and also the ability to identify the weaknesses of his opponents. James didn’t enter this sport with those abilities; he learned them from his trainer, Buddy McGirt. Our team realizes what each of our jobs is and the rest is up to James. Do I believe James and Buddy will make boxing history? Yes, without a doubt.” McGirt, who feels that his next fight will be in mid-March on national television, plans on making boxing history with his dad, Buddy.
