Providence native Godfrey (16-0, 9 KOs), rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Council, takes on Williams (42-5-1, 35 KOs), fighting out of Long Beach (CA), in the 12-round main event. | San Juan, Puerto Rico (November 2) – It’ s the fistic version of a daily double, and a distinction no other boxer has ever achieved, but yesterday at the World Boxing Organization (WBO) convention in Puerto Rico, Oscar de la Hoya was honored twice by the sanctioning body, both as “Fighter of The Decade” and “Promoter of The Year”. “It’s a great honor for me to accept these awards from the WBO, and I’m truly humbled by all of this,” said De La Hoya. “To be recognized for what I’ve done – in and out of the ring – has always been something I hoped would happen, and I thank the WBO for making that dream a reality.” Read the Full Story..... |

Leading up to this fight, many pundits and fans alike gave Juarez very little chance if any to accomplish his mission to be the next champion. People said that he was either too slow, not polished enough, or strong enough to go twelve rounds with the Mexican national. I wonder if by losing the way Juarez did, going twelve rounds and not touching the canvass and never giving up, has he earned himself some respect in the eyes of the critics. I asked Ronnie Shields, Rock’s trainer, to assess his charge’s outing and what he thinks is next for the Houston fighter. JM: Ronnie, in your own words, please give us your thoughts on Rock’s outing against Marquez. RS: After the first round, Ray Ontiveros told the doctor that it would be hard to stop the cut, but the doctor said just to put the medicine and see what happens. And then after the second round I told the doctor that this thing was bad, but the doctor said, “well, it didn’t open up anymore than it was so it’s OK” so I went ahead and gave Rock instructions to keep fighting. | HOLLYWOOD, FL, November 5 – Following his impressive fifth round stoppage of veteran Henry Porras on October 30th, super middleweight contender Edison Miranda silenced any critics who questioned whether he would still be the same fighter at 168 pounds that he was at 160. One person he didn’t silence was fellow contender Jean Pascal, who made a spectacle out of himself in calling out Miranda from ringside and in the ring after the bout. “He’s got a lot of mouth,” said Miranda, now 29-2 with 25 KOs. “I’d like to see if he’s got the heart to match…but I doubt it.” The unbeaten Pascal, who is ranked second in the world by the WBO and fourth by the WBC, would be an intriguing match for ‘Pantera’, who would love to physically take the Haitian-born Canadian’s rankings from him in the ring. “Pascal was doing a lot of laughing on Tuesday. He will be crying, not laughing the next time I see him in a ring.” Pantera returned to Puerto Rico on Wednesday to watch WBO's Tournament of Champions at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico. To his surprise Jean Pascal was also in the audience. “I hear someone talking loud and there is Jean running his mouth. I was surprised to see this clown actually followed me back to Puerto Rico.” The talking quickly turned ugly and both fighters tore off their shirts and got into each other’s face. Pantera had to be taken away by his people as the entire 5,000 people in the crowd chanted ‘PANTERA’. “He is crazy to want to fight me. If this fight ever happen I will wipe that grin off his face with one right hand. Go back to Canada Jean and make the fight worth while.” |

| Both boxing fans and the press who cover the game have been treated this year to some epic showdowns. We’ve seen the fights that need to happen come to fruition: Vazquez/Marquez (twice), Miranda/Pavlik, Pavlik/Taylor, Calzaghe/Kessler, Diaz/Freitas, Hopkins/Wright, Pacquiao/Barrera, and we still have Mayweather/Hatton to cap the year off, all in all a great year for the sweet science. The problem that remains is the sports, at times, lack of integrity. Bogus decisions, (see Casamayor vs Santa Cruz), and sanctioning bodies refusing to stick to their decisions regarding mandatory challengers to their titles. We saw it with the circus that was Sam Peter and his camp dealing with the WBC, now the latest victim appears to be Hartford, Connecticut’s undefeated IBO Super Bantamweight Champion Mike Oliver. Oliver has boxed his way to an impressive 21-0 (7) record, and to his credit, unlike many young, unbeaten fighters Oliver has beaten quality opposition. His last five opponents had a combined record of 118-25-2 before being dispatched by Oliver, no cupcakes in that bunch. An impressive win over Al Seeger earned Mike Oliver the vacant IBO Super Bantamweight title, and a hard fought victory over Cruz Carvajal was supposed to get him a crack at current IBF champ Steve Molitor. We learned today that Oliver may in fact be denied that mandatory shot that he earned with that win over Carvajal, in the IBF’s so-called “title eliminator”. We spoke with Oliver’s trainer and former title contender “Ice Man” John Scully regarding Mike’s situation, what effect it may have on his young fighter, and what the future holds for the young champion. Phil: Has there been any communication between yourself or any of Mike's people with Molitor's camp as far as getting a fight done? ICE: Rich Capiello from what I understand has been in contact with them, yes Phil: Did the IBF offer any explanation for not recognizing Mike as the mandatory to Steve Molitor following his win over Cruz Carvajal. ICE: We have only heard from outside sources on these developments. I mean, that fight with Carvajal was in July and still nothing has even been officially mentioned anywhere about us getting our turn. Phil: How does this kind of Alphabet nonsense affect a fighter? How has this particular instance affected Mike? ICE: Mike is kind of an unaffected type of kid. He doesn't really pay attention to the rankings and things like this. He wouldn't even know who Molitor was if the guy walked up to him on the street Phil: Now that Mike owns the IBO belt after a nice win over Al Seeger do you believe the other belt holders will seek him out? Or are you of the belief that Molitor and others are avoiding him? ICE: I tend to think Mike-Mike is in a tough spot. Joe Frazier told Marvin Hagler something back in the late 1970's when Hagler was having trouble getting his chance at a world title that I think might apply to Mike Oliver now. "Your black, your southpaw and you can fight." Phil: Who have you heard would possibly be taking Mike's spot as Molitor's mandatory? ICE: I forget the two boxers names but hey are supposedly the #9 and #15 ranked guys right now, whoever that is Phil: In your opinion, who are the top 3 Super Bantamweights in the world? ICE: I suppose you'd have to have Israel Vazquez, Rafael Marquez and Ponce DeLeon up there based on standing and accomplishment. Then Molitor and Celestino Cabbalero. And although I think DeLeon does not quite compare to the others -including Mike Oliver- in terms of overall skills his power and determination make up for a lack of classic skills. Phil: If the Molitor fight doesn't happen in the very near future what is Mike's next plan of attack? Have any interesting match-ups been proposed? ICE: We have not heard anything at all to tell you the truth. Since July we have been looking to Molitor because we are #2 and there is no one ranked above us. You know, he was an unknown and still is really when he got a shot at a vacant title against Hunter. Now you listen to him talk and you get the impression he thinks he is on the level of Oscar and Floyd, you know? I have news for him, though. He is still climbing the ladder like we are and just like he got his shot he needs to give us ours. Our resume to this point is much, much more impressive than his was at the time he got his chance at Hunter for a vacant crown. If he deserved it then we certainly deserve it, too. Rules are rules and if they weren't in place you would have never even gotten your chance and we wouldn't even be having these discussions right now.
