If opponents of Edison Miranda thought
that they had enough problems to deal
with before, after ‘Pantera’s surgical
destruction of veteran contender Henry
Porras on October 30th, they now know
that they’re dealing with a bigger,
stronger, faster, and more dangerous
fighter than ever before.

RONNIE SHIELDS WEIGHS IN ON THE
AFTERMATH OF JUAREZ/MARQUEZ,
DIAZ/PACQUAIO, AND TRAINING
JERMAIN TAYLOR
Interview By: John Martinez / Boxing
Realm

(05Nov07) This past Saturday,
contender Rocky Juarez lost his bid to
wrestle the WBC super featherweight
title from reigning champion, Juan
Manual Marquez. Leading up to this fight,
many pundits and fans alike gave Juarez
very little chance if any to accomplish his
mission to be the next champion.

People said that he was either too slow,
not polished enough, or strong enough
to go twelve rounds with the Mexican
national. I wonder if by losing the way
Juarez did, going twelve rounds and not
touching the canvass and never giving
up, has he earned himself some
respect in the eyes of the critics. I asked
Ronnie Shields, Rock’s trainer, to
assess his charge’s outing and what he
thinks is next for the Houston fighter.

HOLLYWOOD, FL, November 5 –
Following his impressive fifth round
stoppage of veteran Henry Porras on
October 30th, super middleweight
contender Edison Miranda silenced any
critics who questioned whether he
would still be the same fighter at 168
pounds that he was at 160.

One person he didn’t silence was fellow
contender Jean Pascal, who made a
spectacle out of himself in calling out
Miranda from ringside and in the ring
after the bout.

“He’s got a lot of mouth,” said Miranda,
now 29-2 with 25 KOs.  “I’d like to see if
he’s got the heart to match…but I doubt
it.”

The unbeaten Pascal, who is ranked
second in the world by the WBO and
fourth by the WBC, would be an
intriguing match for ‘Pantera’, who would
love to physically take the Haitian-born
Canadian’s rankings from him in the
ring.

“Pascal was doing a lot of laughing on
Tuesday.  He will be crying, not laughing
the next time I see him in a ring.”

Pantera returned to Puerto Rico on
Wednesday to watch WBO's
Tournament of Champions at the
Coliseo de Puerto Rico.  To his surprise
Jean Pascal was also in the audience.
“I hear someone talking loud and there
is Jean running his mouth.  I was
surprised to see this clown actually
followed me back to Puerto Rico.”

The talking quickly turned ugly and both
fighters tore off their shirts and got into
each other’s face.  Pantera had to be
taken away by his people as the entire
5,000 people in the crowd chanted
‘PANTERA’.

“He is crazy to want to fight me.  If this
fight ever happen I will wipe that grin off
his face with one right hand.  Go back to
Canada Jean and make the fight worth
while.”

Fans that have purchased over $1 million in tickets to see two-time world
champion “El Feroz” Fernando Vargas (26-4, 22 KOs) and three-time world
champion Ricardo “El Matador” Mayorga (27-6-1, 22 KOs) in what is anticipated
to be a street-style brawl at STAPLES Center will get their chance when the two
meet on the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, Nov. 23.

Tickets priced at $300, $150, $100 and $50 are on sale online at ticketmaster.
com, via Ticketmaster charge-by-phone lines at (213) 480-3232 or (714) 740-
2000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers.  The bout is scheduled for 12
rounds at a catch weigh of 166 pounds.

Vargas and Mayorga will fight in a highly-anticipated main event of a card that
begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and is being distributed by SHOWTIME® PPV.

Before Tuesday’s open media workout started, the brash, colorful, outspoken
Mayorga held a picture of Vargas next to his crotch, pointed to the media and
said, “Don’t mess with me!”

Here is what Mayorga also had to say:

RICARDO “EL MATADOR’’ MAYORGA

“If Vargas wants to run like little Miss Mayweather (Floyd Mayweather) than I am
going to get him a pink skirt and pink rollerblades and he can run around the
ring in those.

“I respect all Mexican fighters because they fight with courage. What makes me
upset with Vargas is that he says he is going to beat me when all he does is
run from his opponents.  How is he going to beat me if he runs and is a
coward?

“Vargas is going to be a coward and run from the very beginning.  I don’t plan to
wait around for him to fight.  I’ll be looking to knock him out in the early rounds.

“It’s going to be an advantage for me to fight at a higher weight.  Vargas is too
fat to keep up with me. He is done. He doesn’t have the skills to fight me.

“Vargas is done as a fighter.  He was great when he was in his prime.  He was
a typical Mexican fighter with (guts), but now he doesn’t have anything left.  He’s
taken way too many shots. He is done.

“Vargas made a very big mistake picking this fight to be his farewell fight. If he
wanted to retire, he should not have taken a fight with me. He is not going to
retire with a victory.  He is going to lose and embarrass himself.

“My mom’s birthday is coming up and she asked for a great present from me.
She asked me to knock out Vargas as her birthday gift and that is what I intend
to do.

“If he stands in front of me, the fight will last one or two rounds.  If he decides to
run, it will last maybe five rounds.

“I am looking forward to fighting in Los Angeles .  The hard part of training camp
is over.  I am just winding down preparations and staying sharp for the fight.”
