Fighters who lost their “0” in 2007:
Who Bounces Back
and who Falls Flat in 08”
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the
sport, or the manner in which fighters
are beaten between the ropes, whatever
it is one loss in boxing can be more
damaging to an athlete than in any other
sport.

After reading all the brouhaha and
alleged facts spread by the supposed
insiders regarding the IBF/WBA, and as
of now, WBO undefeated lightweight
champion Juan “ Baby Bull” Diaz’s
cancelled fight with the promising
brawler Michael Katsidis I decided to
ask the one man who would definitely
know what happened or for that matter
what did not happen. His name- Willie
Savannah.

Willie, manager to the undefeated
volume punching Diaz, was more than
willing to give his thoughts on the matter
and I of course was all to ready to lend
my ear for the cause. Savannah was
adamant that the fight with Katsidis was
the only reason why Team Diaz signed a
one-fight extension with Don King.

Power Plus Potential;
What the Fists of Edison Miranda
are Loaded with
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
There is nothing a fight fan respects
more than a warrior who gives
everything he has regardless of the
situation or who he is in with.  Guys like
Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti are
admired for more than just their winning
records and epic battles.  It is their
unrelenting will to never give up no
matter how much the deck is stacked
against them.  There is no quit, no
cruising to a decision, no knowing when
to say when with Edison “Pantera”
Miranda.  He knows only one speed, he
fights only one way, and that is hard and
fast inspiring fear in opponents and awe
from spectators.

Interview with
Edison “Pantera” Miranda
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Edison Miranda – “I watched the last
Lacy fight and was not impressed at
all.  I also watched the Contender and
my feeling was the same about Bika.
These guys are simply not at my level.”

I caught up with the punishing power
puncher Edison Miranda following his
sensational knockout of David Banks on
ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.  As always
Miranda pulled no punches, so to speak,
as he gave me his take on a second
fight with Pavlik, his thoughts on Jeff
Lacy and Sakio Bika and what a typical
day of training entails.

The once top rated Middleweight
contender now inhabits the Super
Middleweight division.  And make no
mistake about it he wants to fight the
best the division has to offer.  Here is
what Pantera had to say, enjoy.

PS:  Firstly congratulations on an
outstanding, sensational win over David
Banks.

Miranda:  Thank you very much.

PS:  Since becoming one of the top rated
Middleweights you recently made the
move up to Super Middleweight.  You
fought Allan Green at a catch weight of
162 before meeting Pavlik at 160.  When
did you realize that physically you could
no longer make the Middleweight limit?

Miranda:  I’ve always had trouble since I
was a big Middleweight, but in the Pavlik
fight my body would not lose the weight
no matter what I did.  I felt like I had an
obligation to the fans to fight that night,
but afterwards, I knew I had to consider
going to Super Middleweight.

HINCKLEY, Minn. (Feb. 1, 2008) – It was
a cold night in Minnesota , but there
were two action packed, sizzling fights
on Friday night’s ShoBox: The New
Generation.

Alfredo Angulo stormed into the ring
against Ricardo Cortes an undefeated
prospect fresh off an impressive first
round TKO with another tough challenge
in front of him.  He walked out
victoriously once again, his
unblemished record intact, with another
knockout in the first stanza and world
title hopes in his near future.

When they first met Antonio Margarito
was already an established champion
with four title defenses on his résumé.
Kermit Cintron was an undefeated up
and comer with 23 knockouts in 24
fights as a pro.  Although Margarito held
an edge in experience and quality
opponents faced it was Cintron who
appeared to be the future.  Five rounds
and four knockdowns later Margarito had
erased any doubt as to who the
preeminent fighter was.  Not only did
Margarito drop Cintron four times, and
add a serious blemish to his previously
perfect record, but he cast a shadow of
doubt over the future of the once prized
prospect.

Since suffering his first, and only, career
loss at the hands of Antonio Margarito in
2005, Kermit Cintron has bounced back
by rattling off five consecutive victories.
Impressively all five wins came by way of
knockout and more importantly during
that same stretch Cintron captured the
vacant IBF title by stopping Mark Suarez.

Saturday night in Montreal
HARTFORD (February 6, 2008) - Former
world lightweight title challenger Israel
'Pito' Cardona has become a
gatekeeper of the welterweight division

Hartford-native Cardona (36-8, 28 KOs),
now 33, heads north of the border for a
10-round test in the main event Saturday
night at the Montreal Casino against

Canadian light welterweight champion.

'Pito' won his first 24 pro fights, 18 by
knockout, including an IBO super

featherweight winning performance
against Jeff Mayweather and Cardona
later defeated Steve Larrimore for the
IBO light welterweight crown.

In 1997, 'Pito' stopped 'Mighty' Ivan
Robinson (23-1) in the third round of
their USBA lightweight title bout and

No chance.  Essentially that is what
former Middleweight champion Jermain
Taylor has been given in his rematch
against current top dog Kelly Pavlik.
Since besting future Hall of Famer
Bernard Hopkins twice and fighting
Winky Wright to a draw Taylor has seen
his stock plummet.  Fairly or not Taylor
has faced plenty of criticism.  He
defended his crown against blown up
Welterweights in Cory Spinks and
Kassim Ouma and to make matters
worse he was less than impressive in
doing so.

Andre Berto stops Michel Trabant;
Unbeaten Berto makes Trabant
quit on his stool
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Andre Berto continues to impress by
stopping Michel Trabant.  Trabant, who
had never been stopped, quit on his
stool following the conclusion of round
six.  Berto snapped off nasty body shots
and stinging jabs throughout all six
rounds befuddling Trabant who
consistently failed to let his hands go.
The punctuation of Berto’s attack
came in the 3rd round when Berto
scored numerous vicious uppercuts.

It became clear early as to why Trabant
had never previously been knocked out.
His chin was sturdy but unfortunately for
him that was the only positive asset that
he brought to the ring with him.  Trabant
had no answers and Berto simply
punished him.

Quintana opened up cuts over both of

persistently targeted them.

IBO Ratings March 2008
WBC Ratings February 2008
(LOS ANGELES – March 7, 2008) – Over the course of his storied 10-year
career, two division world champion Ricky Hatton has achieved the rarest of
feats – becoming a legitimate star on both sides of the Atlantic .  Now, as he
continues on his quest to be boxing’s best pound for pound fighter, “The
Hitman” has aligned himself with Golden Boy Promotions, the premier
promotional company in boxing, which he hopes will lead him on the road to
the Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota.

“I’m pleased to be working with Golden Boy Promotions and I know that each
one of my fights will be bigger than the last, not only for me, but for all of my
loyal fans,” said Hatton. “I got a taste of working with Oscar and his team with
my fight with Floyd Mayweather and they’re a world-class company.  They're the
kind of team I need to keep me in big fights against the best in the world.”

President of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar de la Hoya continued, “I’ve always
been a fan of Ricky Hatton and it’s an honor to partner with Ricky and Punch
Promotions to add him to the Golden Boy Promotions roster.  He’s a fighter
universally loved by fight fans because of his heart and aggressive style.  We’re
all expecting even bigger and better things from him in the coming months.”

Hatton’s first fight under this new promotional contract will be announced at a
later date.

One of boxing’s true superstars, Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton (43-1, 31 KO’s) has
grown from a local attraction into a member of boxing’s pound for pound elite.
A proud native and resident of Manchester , England , Hatton won his first world
title, the WBU crown, in 2001 and defended that belt an amazing 15 times.  But
it wasn’t until he stopped Kostya Tszyu for the IBF and Ring Magazine junior
welterweight titles in June of 2005 that he truly broke out onto the world scene.
Later in 2005 he added the WBA title to his collection by knocking out Carlos
Maussa and by 2006 he won the WBA welterweight title by defeating Luis
Collazo in his first fight in the United States since 2000.  Hatton has since
made the US his second home, defeating Juan Urango and Jose Luis Castillo
here.  In his most recent fight, Hatton fell short of victory against the world’s
best pound for pound fighter, Floyd Mayweather in one of the year’s biggest
events.  After a short vacation, Hatton is chomping at the bit to get back in the
ring and reaffirming that he is the best 140-pound fighter in the world.
