In the Co-Feature highly regarded featherweight prospect Dat Nguyen
impressed with a good win over a tough Castulo Gonzalez.  In a victory where
most fans as well as media in attendance agreed was much closer than the
judges scoring (78-74(2), 79-73) Gonzalez weathered Dat's relentless attack
while having some pretty good success scoring hard connects both upstairs
and down.

The judges clearly favored Dat's work rate, which is just mind boggling to
witness, over Gonzalez harder, more effective shots.  There was a moment or
two when Gonzalez actually sent Nguyen reeling after thumping shots to the
head.  Dat however was able to weather anything Gonzalez threw his way and
did what was needed to secure a tough win.  Two cuts which opened over
Gonzalez eye and on his brow could have given the appearance that the fight
wasn't as close as it really was.

Dat Nguyen improves to 11-0 (6) and remains one of boxings hottest young
prospects.  I Love his energy and his hand speed and combinations are
electric but at times he appears very hittable.  Dat has demonstrated a solid
chin but against top level opponents his defense would need improvement in
order to succeed.  On the positive side he has the knowledge and experience
of world class trainer Buddy McGirt in his corner which should help him
continue to make strides in all aspects of his craft.
In the Main Event of the evening Mike "Machine Gun" Oliver battled former
champion Cruz Carvajal to a Unanimous decision victory.  The judges scored
the fight 118-111 and 118-110(2) respectively while my scorecard read
118-111 all in favor of Oliver.

Despite the apparent wide margin of victory this was a tough fight for Oliver
whose face showed plenty of swelling from some heavy shots Carvajal had
hammered him with.  While Carvajal was sturdy and technically sound Oliver's
speed was just too much for him to cope with.  From the opening bell Oliver lit
him up with lightning quick combos which Carvajal had no answer.  Being a
seasoned veteran Carvajal never disappeared remaining right in front of Oliver
and exchanging until the end.

With the win Mike Oliver runs his perfect record to 20-0 (7).  The Oliver camp
looks forward to big things in the near future which may include a shot at
current IBF titlist Steve Molitor.
In an exciting night at the

Nguyen delivered fan

"Awesome" Chad Dawson successfully defends his
WBC Title with a 6th round TKO

"Awesome" Chad Dawson scores a 6th Round TKO victory and successfully
defends his WBC championship belt for the first time against the hard hitting
Jesus Ruiz.  Dawson completely dominated the action right from the opening
bell.  Jesus Ruiz was completely baffled in the ring and had no answers for
Dawson's quick hands and constant movement.  Dawson, a resident of New
Haven, enjoyed the support of his hometown fans at the Connecticut
Convention Center.  The bout which was televised live on Showtime
Championship Boxing served as the Co-Feature for Antonio Tarver vs Elvir
Muriqi.

After decisively controlling the action in the first three rounds "Awesome"
Dawson really hurt Ruiz in the 4th.  A stiff jab along with some short straight
right hands had bloodied Ruiz's nose early in the round.  Having had success
landing upstairs Dawson turned his focus to Ruiz's body delivering a punishing
series of body shots that left Ruiz covering his sides and noticeably in pain.

By the start of round 5 Ruiz was no longer eager to exchange as survival
seemed to be his new goal.  Wisely and to the excitement of the crowd Dawson
pressed on realizing he had his man in trouble.  Dawson continued his assault
on Ruiz's mid-section while continuing to feed a steady stream of jabs straight
through his defense.

By the start of round 6 the inevitable outcome of the fight was clear, the only
question was when Dawson would end Ruiz's night.  He answered that
question loud and clear, pinning Ruiz along the ropes and hammering away.
Ruiz tried to withstand the onslaught but had absorbed too much damage
throughout the fight.  A thunderous left hand from Dawson shook Ruiz hard
prompting Referee Johnny Callas to call a halt to the action.   The TKO came at
the time of 2:00 in the 6th round.

Chad Dawson improves to 24-0 (16 KO) and has proven himself not only to be
a solid champion but someone who could be a force in the Light Heavyweight
division for years to come.  A match up with Tarver who went on to defeat Elvir
Muriqi later in the evening would seem to make sense.

After the fight Dawson and his promoter, Gary Shaw, stated their desire to fight
the best that the division has to offer.  Dawson went as far as to say "The
question isn't whether I want Tarver, it's whether Tarver wants me".  Antonio
Tarver, the newly crowned IBO champion, was less willing to call Dawson out
saying that he would pursue the biggest fights out there, whoever that may be.

On Friday August 10, Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey improved his professional
record to 16-0 when he defeated Derrick “D-Train” Brown in a Cruiser weight
clash at Twin River Casino in Lincoln Rhode Island.  The surprisingly
unanimous decision in favor of Godfrey may have confirmed the belief that
fighting in ones hometown is worth 2 or 3 rounds on the scorecard, or perhaps
the old adage “You must knock out the Champ to beat the Champ” still holds a
bit of weight amongst some Judges.  The 10 rounds of fighting consisted not of
the excitement, hard punching, and knock downs that we’ve grown accustomed
to seeing from Godfrey, but of a boring game of low contact hide and go seek.

In round 1, both fighters decided to hold a “feeling out party”, barely throwing
anything more than slow ineffective jabs here and there just to keep the
distance.

Round 2 held only slightly more excitement. Brown appeared to be a bit more
active than Godfrey, but Godfrey defended well, making Brown miss more often
than not. Although Matt didn’t light up the compubox punch count numbers, he
seemed to land a few more quality punches than Brown.

On December 1st, live from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, three champions
put their titles on the line in the season finale of Showtime Championship
Boxing.  Two respected veterans of the fight game, Antonio Tarver and Vernon
Forrest, scored impressive victories over tough yet ill-equipped opponents in
Danny Santiago and Michele Piccirillo.  Nonito Donaire overwhelmed Luis
Maldanado in his first title defense since upsetting Vic Darchinyan.

All three men entered the ring with something to prove.  For Tarver and Forrest
an inspiring win would keep them on track for bigger, more meaningful fights
that would lead to big paydays, and help cement their status as two elite
fighters of this generation.  A successful defense for Donaire versus a tough
challenger legitimized his win over Darchinyan and proved that “The Filipino
Flash” wasn’t “The Filipino Flash” in the pan.  Three Champions entered,
prevailed, and proved their points with authority.

Cardona the new welterweight

Saturday night in Montreal
HARTFORD (February 6, 2008) - Former
world lightweight title challenger Israel
'Pito' Cardona has become a
gatekeeper of the welterweight division
since returning to the ring nearly two

Hartford-native Cardona (36-8, 28 KOs),
now 33, heads north of the border for a
10-round test in the main event Saturday
night at the Montreal Casino against
unbeaten prospect Antonio Decarie
(17-0, 5 KOs), the 25-year-old former
Canadian light welterweight champion.

'Pito' won his first 24 pro fights, 18 by
knockout, including an IBO super

featherweight winning performance
against Jeff Mayweather and Cardona
later defeated Steve Larrimore for the
IBO light welterweight crown.

In 1997, 'Pito' stopped 'Mighty' Ivan
Robinson (23-1) in the third round of
their USBA lightweight title bout and
three fights later, Robinson beat Arturo
Gatti for the first of two times in their
1998 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year.

Edison Miranda – “I watched the last
Lacy fight and was not impressed at
all.  I also watched the Contender and
my feeling was the same about Bika.
These guys are simply not at my level.”

I caught up with the punishing power
puncher Edison Miranda following his
sensational knockout of David Banks on
ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.  As always
Miranda pulled no punches, so to speak,
as he gave me his take on a second
fight with Pavlik, his thoughts on Jeff
Lacy and Sakio Bika and what a typical
day of training entails.

The once top rated Middleweight
contender now inhabits the Super
Middleweight division.  And make no
mistake about it he wants to fight the
best the division has to offer.  Here is
what Pantera had to say, enjoy.

PS:  Firstly congratulations on an
outstanding, sensational win over David
Banks.

Miranda:  Thank you very much.

PS:  Since becoming one of the top rated
Middleweights you recently made the
move up to Super Middleweight.  You
fought Allan Green at a catch weight of
162 before meeting Pavlik at 160.  When
did you realize that physically you could
no longer make the Middleweight limit?

Miranda:  I’ve always had trouble since I
was a big Middleweight, but in the Pavlik
fight my body would not lose the weight
no matter what I did.  I felt like I had an
obligation to the fans to fight that night,
but afterwards, I knew I had to consider
going to Super Middleweight.

When they first met Antonio Margarito

with four title defenses on his résumé.
Kermit Cintron was an undefeated up

an edge in experience and quality
opponents faced it was Cintron who
appeared to be the future.  Five rounds
and four knockdowns later Margarito had
erased any doubt as to who the
preeminent fighter was.  Not only did
Margarito drop Cintron four times, and
add a serious blemish to his previously

prospect.

Since suffering his first, and only, career

Impressively all five wins came by way of
knockout and more importantly during
