Fighters who lost their “0” in 2007:
Who Bounces Back
and who Falls Flat in 08”
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the
sport, or the manner in which fighters
are beaten between the ropes, whatever
it is one loss in boxing can be more
damaging to an athlete than in any other
sport.

If Roger Federer drops a match he was
heavily favored to win, or Tiger Woods
fails to win a tournament that everyone
knows he should have, sports fans
collectively assume that these highly
skilled pros will resume their winning
ways the very next chance they get.
Whether it’s an individual or team sport
a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the
road, something to learn from, after all
nobody is perfect right?  In fact often
times a loss is viewed as beneficial to a
team or individuals’ growth and the
rectification of flaws can help strengthen
prior short comings.

After reading all the brouhaha and
alleged facts spread by the supposed
insiders regarding the IBF/WBA, and as
of now, WBO undefeated lightweight
champion Juan “ Baby Bull” Diaz’s
cancelled fight with the promising
brawler Michael Katsidis I decided to
ask the one man who would definitely
know what happened or for that matter
what did not happen. His name- Willie
Savannah.

Willie, manager to the undefeated
volume punching Diaz, was more than
willing to give his thoughts on the matter
and I of course was all to ready to lend
my ear for the cause. Savannah was
adamant that the fight with Katsidis was
the only reason why Team Diaz signed a
one-fight extension with Don King.

Power Plus Potential;
What the Fists of Edison Miranda
are Loaded with
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
There is nothing a fight fan respects
more than a warrior who gives
everything he has regardless of the
situation or who he is in with.  Guys like
Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti are
admired for more than just their winning
records and epic battles.  It is their
unrelenting will to never give up no
matter how much the deck is stacked
against them.  There is no quit, no
cruising to a decision, no knowing when
to say when with Edison “Pantera”
Miranda.  He knows only one speed, he
fights only one way, and that is hard and
fast inspiring fear in opponents and awe
from spectators.

Pantera Back with a Bang;
Miranda blasts Banks through the Ropes
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
The fight began slowly with David Banks
doing what he needed to be effective
against such a heavy hitter like Edison
Miranda.  Banks kept moving, circling to
his right, in order to avoid Miranda’s a
big right hand.  I saw the 1st round to be
even with neither man scoring very
effectively.  No surprise there given the
vastly contrasting styles these two
brought to the ring.

Interview with
Edison “Pantera” Miranda
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Edison Miranda – “I watched the last
Lacy fight and was not impressed at
all.  I also watched the Contender and
my feeling was the same about Bika.
These guys are simply not at my level.”

I caught up with the punishing power
puncher Edison Miranda following his
sensational knockout of David Banks on
ESPN’s Friday Night Fights.  As always
Miranda pulled no punches, so to speak,
as he gave me his take on a second
fight with Pavlik, his thoughts on Jeff
Lacy and Sakio Bika and what a typical
day of training entails.

The once top rated Middleweight
contender now inhabits the Super
Middleweight division.  And make no
mistake about it he wants to fight the
best the division has to offer.  Here is
what Pantera had to say, enjoy.

PS:  Firstly congratulations on an
outstanding, sensational win over David
Banks.

Miranda:  Thank you very much.

PS:  Since becoming one of the top rated
Middleweights you recently made the
move up to Super Middleweight.  You
fought Allan Green at a catch weight of
162 before meeting Pavlik at 160.  When
did you realize that physically you could
no longer make the Middleweight limit?

Miranda:  I’ve always had trouble since I
was a big Middleweight, but in the Pavlik
fight my body would not lose the weight
no matter what I did.  I felt like I had an
obligation to the fans to fight that night,
but afterwards, I knew I had to consider
going to Super Middleweight.

Alfredo Angulo stormed into the ring

victoriously once again, his
unblemished record intact, with another
knockout in the first stanza and world

When they first met Antonio Margarito
was already an established champion
with four title defenses on his résumé.
Kermit Cintron was an undefeated up
and comer with 23 knockouts in 24
fights as a pro.  Although Margarito held
an edge in experience and quality
opponents faced it was Cintron who
appeared to be the future.  Five rounds
and four knockdowns later Margarito had
erased any doubt as to who the
preeminent fighter was.  Not only did
Margarito drop Cintron four times, and
add a serious blemish to his previously
perfect record, but he cast a shadow of
doubt over the future of the once prized
prospect.

Since suffering his first, and only, career
loss at the hands of Antonio Margarito in
2005, Kermit Cintron has bounced back
by rattling off five consecutive victories.
Impressively all five wins came by way of
knockout and more importantly during
that same stretch Cintron captured the
vacant IBF title by stopping Mark Suarez.

Cardona the new welterweight
gatekeeper, fights unbeaten Decarie
Saturday night in Montreal
HARTFORD (February 6, 2008) - Former
world lightweight title challenger Israel
'Pito' Cardona has become a
gatekeeper of the welterweight division
since returning to the ring nearly two
years ago after being retired 3 1/2-years.

Hartford-native Cardona (36-8, 28 KOs),
now 33, heads north of the border for a
10-round test in the main event Saturday
night at the Montreal Casino against
unbeaten prospect Antonio Decarie
(17-0, 5 KOs), the 25-year-old former
Canadian light welterweight champion.

'Pito' won his first 24 pro fights, 18 by
knockout, including an IBO super

featherweight winning performance
against Jeff Mayweather and Cardona
later defeated Steve Larrimore for the
IBO light welterweight crown.

In 1997, 'Pito' stopped 'Mighty' Ivan
Robinson (23-1) in the third round of
their USBA lightweight title bout and
three fights later, Robinson beat Arturo
Gatti for the first of two times in their
1998 Ring Magazine Fight of the Year.

Unbeaten Berto makes Trabant
quit on his stool
By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Andre Berto continues to impress by
stopping Michel Trabant.  Trabant, who
had never been stopped, quit on his
stool following the conclusion of round
six.  Berto snapped off nasty body shots
and stinging jabs throughout all six
rounds befuddling Trabant who
consistently failed to let his hands go.
The punctuation of Berto’s attack
came in the 3rd round when Berto
scored numerous vicious uppercuts.

It became clear early as to why Trabant
had never previously been knocked out.
His chin was sturdy but unfortunately for
him that was the only positive asset that
he brought to the ring with him.  Trabant
had no answers and Berto simply
punished him.

heavyweight fight.
ROBERT GUERRERO RETAINS IBF FEATHERWEIGHT

JASON LITZAU, TRAVIS WALKER GETS REVENGE,
STOPS T.J. WILSON IN SECOND
Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at 11 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME
Tachi Hotel & Casino, Lemoore, California
Photos By: Daisy Rosas/For Showtime
The crowd-pleasing doubleheader, promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions,
LLC, took place in front of a sellout crowd at Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino in
Lemoore, Calif. It aired live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the
west coast).

Fans anxiously awaiting the highly anticipated rubber match between Israel
Vazquez and Rafael Marquez today/Saturday, March 1, on SHOWTIME
CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the west coast) got more
than an appetizer. They got two marvelous main courses rolled into one.

So what else is new? After all, this is ShoBox and exhilarating, compelling
matchups has been the norm since the popular pugilistic series debuted in
July 2001.

Southpaw Guerrero (22-1-1, 1 ND, 15 KOs), of nearby Gilroy, Calif., fairly
dominated Litzau (23-2, 19 KOs), of St. Paul, Minn., before dropping him twice
in the eighth round. After the second knockdown, the referee stopped the
contest at 2:25.

Making the second defense in his second stint as IBF 126-pound kingpin,
Guerrero floored the challenger the first time with two left hands approximately
40 seconds into the session. A three-punch combination ended the evening for
Litzau.
“It went how I expected it to go,’’ Guerrero said. “A lot of fans came here and a
whole lot more were watching on SHOWTIME to see me put on a good show
and I think I did. The support I get is just incredible and I really appreciate the
fans that come to see me fight or watch on television.

“I expended a lot of energy at the beginning throwing a lot of power punches. A
lot landed, but some missed, too. Between rounds, my corner told me to just
go out and relax and box more and let the knockout come and sure enough
they were right and it did.

“I’ll fight anybody next. There are a lot of big fights out there. If the winner of
Vazquez-Marquez wants to move up, I would fight either of them. I am ready to
fight now.’’

Litzau started slowly and seemed reluctant to let his fists go. Once he picked
up the pace, however, he landed some solid shots, but rarely in combination.
Guerrero also made him miss, at one point avoiding six consecutive punches.

“I have nothing but respect for Guerrero. He is a great champion,’’ said Litzau,
who’s three fight-winning streak ended. “He came in and did his job. He got a
little dirty at times and got me with some good headbutts, but you will not hear
any excuses from me.

“I worked my butt off in the gym and trained hard. I was as ready as I could be,
but this was his night. I know I did my part to make this a very entertaining fight,
but I’m just 24 and I will be back.’’
In the telecast’s opening bout, Walker (27-
1-1, 21 KOs) of Houston, Tex., exacted
sweet revenge on Wilson (12-2, eight KOs)
of Miami, Fla. Walker won by knockout at 1:
50 of the second round.

This was a rematch of a fight Wilson won
on a controversial 15-second, first-round
KO on Oct. 19, 2007, on ShoBox.

Both boxers came out aggressively and
connected with solid shots in a fast-paced
opening round. The second frame picked
up where the first left off until Wilson ran
into a Walker right uppercut. Walker
continued to connect with unanswered right
and left hands and had Wilson out on his
feet when the referee stepped in and
waved off the proceedings.
“I have never been motivated for any fight before and this is total vindication and
exactly the kind of fight I wanted,’’ Walker said. “I did what I was supposed to do
in our first fight. I knew he wasn’t in my league and I couldn’t wait to show the
world that.

“He hit me with the same kind of punches this time as he did in our first fight,
but this time the referee let it go on. The guy lost a lot of weight and came in
shape (at 264, Wilson weighed 18 pounds lighter than he did four months
ago), but it didn’t matter.
“Maybe the loss was a good thing. It made me smarter. I do know the real
Travis Walker got to show what he was about tonight. I would love to fight any of
the top heavyweights.’’

If Wilson has his way, he and Wilson will have a third encounter.

“There’s a rematch clause in my contract, so, yes, we will fight again,’’ Wilson
said. “I have no idea why the referee stopped the fight. I could have gone on. I
wanted to go on. Walker got his rematch with me. Now he has to give me a
rematch with him.’’
