| On December 1st, live from Foxwoods Resort and Casino, three champions put their titles on the line in the season finale of Showtime Championship Boxing. Two respected veterans of the fight game, Antonio Tarver and Vernon Forrest, scored impressive victories over tough yet ill-equipped opponents in Danny Santiago and Michele Piccirillo. Nonito Donaire overwhelmed Luis Maldanado in his first title defense since upsetting Vic Darchinyan. All three men entered the ring with something to prove. For Tarver and Forrest an inspiring win would keep them on track for bigger, more meaningful fights that would lead to big paydays, and help cement their status as two elite fighters of this generation. A successful defense for Donaire versus a tough challenger legitimized his win over Darchinyan and proved that “The Filipino Flash” wasn’t “The Filipino Flash” in the pan. | James Kirkland improves to 21-0 (18 KOs) with a first round KO over Allen Conyers in their scheduled ten-round Jr. Middleweight contest. It was the main event of ShowTime’s ShoBox series, which they broadcast live from the Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California. Gary Shaw Productions promoted Friday night’s show. Both fighters attacked each other from the beginning of the first round wildly. After thirty seconds had past, Allen Conyers landed a crushing right to the head of Kirkland sending him to the canvas. He was up and ready to go by the count of eight. As soon as referee Ray Corona allowed the two combatants to continue, the war raged on. Conyers tried to finish Kirkland off by throwing wild punches from every angle, but James immediately turned the fight in his favor by landing solid right of his own sending Alien Conyers down. | HOLLYWOOD, FL, December 6 – Former world junior welterweight champion Juan Urango is a changed man. That was never more evident than on Wednesday night, when he dispatched of 62 fight veteran Marty Robbins in five rounds to up his record to 19-1-1 with 15 KOs. “I’m taking this sport much more seriously than ever and I plan on ending every one of my fights from here on out with a knockout,” said Urango. “I want my world title back in 2008 and whoever I have to beat to get back there, I will.” The win over Robbins was Urango’s second since a hard fought decision loss to Ricky Hatton in January. After some soul searching, Urango has left that fight in the past and only looks forward to a bright future. “What’s done is done and I can’t worry about what happened in January with Hatton,” said Urango. “I learned from my defeat and I have changed the way I approach the game. The champions at the top of this division need to watch out, because I’m coming for them.” |

| Floyd Mayweather Jr. kept his perfect record in tact Saturday night by stopping Ricky Hatton in the tenth round of their scheduled twelve round Welterweight Championship fight. The contest was the Main Event of “Undefeated”, which was promoted by Golden Boy Promotions and broadcast live from the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas by HBO PPV. Ricky Hatton pressed the fight. He was the aggressor for most of the contest. Floyd Mayweather was forced to fight Hatton’s fight and turned out to be the victor. With the MGM Grand Arena, packed with singing British fans, both fighters began the fight by going right after each other. It was obvious from the start that Mayweather had the hand and foot speed, but Ricky was a lot quicker than Floyd may have thought. The first round found both fighters landing punches, mostly to the head of each other. Hatton landed a very solid left to the jaw of Mayweather that clearly stunned him. | Floyd Mayweather Jr. pulls out an impressive victory by outlasting and eventually stopping the previously undefeated Ricky Hatton. In what turned out to be a terrific fight with great exchanges and plenty of drama Floyd showed to be the more precise puncher and superior defender. Ricky Hatton did well to take his share of rounds on my scorecard (a view not shared by the judges who had it 89-81, 89-81, 88-82) by mugging Mayweather against the ropes and making the fight a brawl. | Fistic fans had a hell of a good year in 2007. World Champions like JermainTaylor, Vic Darchinyan and Jean Marc Mormeck were overwhelmed and knocked out en route to losing their titles. There were multiple bouts worthy of mention for fight of the year, Vazquez vs. Marquez I & II, Diaz vs. Freitas, Pavlik vs. Taylor, Mosley vs. Cotto, just to name a few. We saw the emergence of new champions, as well as potential stars of the sport, like Nonito Donaire, Kelly Pavlik, Paul Williams and David Haye. Future Hall of Famers Manny Pacquiao, Joe Calzaghe, Bernard Hopkins and Floyd Mayweather Jr. continued their winning ways and further cemented their place amongst the greatest of all time. | The fight was billed as “The Perfect Match Up” but nobody could have predicted the battle that ensued. During the fight both combatants hit the canvas, absorbed punishing power shots, and put on a performance that landed the event on most observers short list for “Fight of the Year”. Jermain Taylor had gone from being considered the next great Middleweight, after defeating Bernard Hopkins twice and fighting Winky Wright to a Draw, to being the target of fan and media criticism over a span of less than two years. The fact that Taylor was matched up against blown up Jr. Middleweights with less than average power badly hurt his reputation. | In a career that spanned from 1956 to 1975, Eddie Perkins engaged in 99 professional fights. He won seventy five of those contests. He met opponents in over twenty different countries. He truly was a " world " champion. Ediie lost three of his first five bouts but rallied to win seven straight. In 1958 he lost to Cleveland, Ohio's Cecil Shorts. He stopped Shorts in a rematch and then he outscored rugged Franke Ryff. In 1959 Eddie won a decision over Paul Armstead but lost to Carl Hubbard and was then halted by Al Urbina. | Edwin Valero improves to 23-0 (23 KOs) with the destruction of Zaid Zavaleta in the third round of their scheduled twelve- round Super Featherweight Championship. The contest was the Main Event of “Night Of Champions” broadcast live on PPV from the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico on Saturday night. Valero, as he always does, came out aggressive and on the attack. Although he claims to train for twelve round bouts, one would never guess it if they watched him fight. To me, he wants to end the fight as quickly as possible. He was throwing punches from every angle, landing on the head and body of Zaid Zavaleta. Zaid, tried to counter Edwin’s attack by throwing and landing several hard shots to the jaw of Valero, but nothing slowed the Champion down. As the ten-second warning was given, Valero landed a solid left that sent Zavaleta down. He was up at eight, was allowed to continue and the bell sounded to end the first round. | Two of the worlds most gifted pound for pound boxers gave us, not one, but two fights worthy of “Fight of the Year” consideration in 2007. A date of March 1st 2008 has been speculated for a third meeting but as of this writing not confirmed. Provided the two are able to get together to cap off a trilogy that, despite the outcome of the third fight, is already a classic. Raphael Marquez and Israel Vazquez should deliver another outstanding performance. Over a total of 13 rounds, a little more than a championship bout, Raphael Marquez and Israel Vazquez brought it for every second. In their first encounter Marquez came out on top, stopping Vazquez, who was unable to continue because of a broken nose, by TKO. Vazquez, despite having to surrender, had his share of highlights in the fight. He floored Marquez with a stiff combo in the 3rd and did good work throughout. | We do not yet know when newly crowned World Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik will make his first title defense. What we do know is that his next bout will be fought at a catch weight of 166, a weight that is more comfortable, after it was well noted that both Pavlik and Taylor were beginning to have difficulty making 160. Kelly Pavlik will step in with Jermain Taylor for their eagerly anticipated rematch on February 16th. They pulled Jean’s opponent right out of the circus to give him an easy night, but it was the opposing clown who stole many rounds away from Jean. If this guy thinks he has any chance in beating Edison Miranda he better go back to school and learn how to fight like a real man. The only thing that impressed me was the wonderful fans of Canada. I admire their desire to see a great fight, but felt bad for them with this disappointing circus event that Pascal delivered. | Light-Heavyweight contender Shaun George wants what every self-respecting pugilist craves: The most challenging assignments available. With Chad Dawson preoccupied with Glen Johnson, Adrian Diaconu has no engagements booked in the meantime. Shaun George says, "Why not give the people something to remember?" George, 16-2-2 (7 KO), wants to fight Diaconu to show who the best young light-heavyweight fighter is. "He has nothing coming up, so let's make it happen. He doesn't dodge anyone and neither do I. I believe I am the best young light heavyweight and I want to show it to the world. I know I can beat him." The Brooklyn-native, who is promoted by Hall of Fame Promotions, is coming off of a dominant decision victory over late-replacement Thomas Reid. Reid stepped in when Eric Harding pulled out a week before the fight, disappointing the peaking George. "It was a fight that I didn't want. It was a big letdown after Eric Harding pulled out, but I did what I had to do to get the job done." George won every round, but was denied the opportunity to show the fans what he was really about. Diaconu, an undefeated, fan-friendly banger from Canada , hasn't made a big splash in America despite his number one ranking by the WBC. "Nobody knows who he is.
