Jean Pascal Survives Scare; Rising Super Middle remains Unbeaten By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

Jean Pascal moves to 21-0 (14) by scoring a UD victory over a game Omar Pittman. The fight began slowly with lots of swings and misses but with Pascal securely in control. With the exception of an off balance slip up, that could have been scored a knockdown; Pascal was cruising winning the first six rounds with relative ease. He had Pittman down in the second, courtesy of a sharp left hook, and he overwhelmed his lesser talented opponent with superior speed and movement. As the 6th round neared its conclusion Pascal held out his arms and taunted Pittman to fight, a move he would soon regret. In the 7th round Pittman smashed Pascal with a right hand, left hook combo that left him wobbly and doing his best to survive the round. Luckily for Pascal, Omar Pittman is not a highly skilled fighter and he just couldn’t find a way to finish. Pascal regained his composure in the 8th; although he was still shaky, and got back to out boxing the over matched Pittman. In studio with ESPN’s Brian Kenney, top rated Super Middleweight, Allan Green gave his take on Jean Pascal stating “Jean Pascal should be locked up for impersonating a fighter”. Green did have more respect for Miranda saying only that the physically gifted Miranda had improvements to make technically.
Fighters who lost their “0” in 2007: Who Bounces Back and who Falls Flat in 08” By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Maybe it’s due to the physicality of the sport, or the manner in which fighters are beaten between the ropes, whatever it is one loss in boxing can be more damaging to an athlete than in any other sport. If Roger Federer drops a match he was heavily favored to win, or Tiger Woods fails to win a tournament that everyone knows he should have, sports fans collectively assume that these highly skilled pros will resume their winning ways the very next chance they get. Whether it’s an individual or team sport a loss is simply viewed as a bump in the road, something to learn from, after all nobody is perfect right? In fact often times a loss is viewed as beneficial to a team or individuals’ growth and the rectification of flaws can help strengthen prior short comings. Read the Full Story.....
After reading all the brouhaha and alleged facts spread by the supposed insiders regarding the IBF/WBA, and as of now, WBO undefeated lightweight champion Juan “ Baby Bull” Diaz’s cancelled fight with the promising brawler Michael Katsidis I decided to ask the one man who would definitely know what happened or for that matter what did not happen. His name- Willie Savannah. Willie, manager to the undefeated volume punching Diaz, was more than willing to give his thoughts on the matter and I of course was all to ready to lend my ear for the cause. Savannah was adamant that the fight with Katsidis was the only reason why Team Diaz signed a one-fight extension with Don King. Read the Full Interview.....

Power Plus Potential; What the Fists of Edison Miranda are Loaded with By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
There is nothing a fight fan respects more than a warrior who gives everything he has regardless of the situation or who he is in with. Guys like Diego Corrales and Arturo Gatti are admired for more than just their winning records and epic battles. It is their unrelenting will to never give up no matter how much the deck is stacked against them. There is no quit, no cruising to a decision, no knowing when to say when with Edison “Pantera” Miranda. He knows only one speed, he fights only one way, and that is hard and fast inspiring fear in opponents and awe from spectators. Read the Full Story.....
CINTRON TO BEGIN FULL TRAINING IN 1-2 WEEKS; PLANS APRIL RING RETURN
TOTOWA, NJ (January 15, 2008) – IBF welterweight champion Kermit Cintron has been told by his doctor— Reading , PA orthopedic surgeon Dr. R. Scott Cook—that he may resume “full training in a week to 10 days”, it was announced today by Main Events CEO Kathy Duva. In November Cook diagnosed Cintron with severe ligament damage in his right hand following the champion’s Nov 23 title-defending victory over Jesse Feliciano (TKO 10). In a statement today Dr. Cook said, “This week Kermit will begin hitting the speed bag. He is up to speed where he should be and is healing well.” “We are in the early stages of finding a Kermit opponent for April,” said Duva. Cintron (29-1, 27 KO’s) injured his right hand in the first round of his bout against Ferguson . Despite the intense pain—which Cintron made evident when he dropped to the canvas following the bout—the champion battled on for 10 rounds before stopping the granite- chinned Feliciano with a two-fisted barrage at the 1:53 mark of round 10.
The World Boxing Council donated today the amount of $10,000 ( U.S. ) to the family of the South Korean boxer Yosam Choi, who recently passed away. The decision to make this donation originated with the fact that Yosam Choi was light flyweight world champion recognized by the WBC, and as a way to pay homage to his memory. Choi passed away on January 2, 2008, after going into a coma after the fight in which he defeated Heri Amol by points; another organization´s regional title was on the line in the bout.

Jones Speed Kills Tito; Jones floors Tito twice, Wins Unanimous Decision By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
Battle of the Titans, or so it was billed, featuring two living legends of the fight game went off with a bang tonight. Live from Madison Square Garden and televised on HBO Pay-Per-View Roy Jones Jr. and Felix Trinidad put their respective legacies on the line. History will always remember these two boxing immortals as winners, tonight however only one man would emerge victorious. This was a fight that Felix Trinidad simply could not win. Everything that mattered within the squared circle pointed to a Roy Jones victory. He was bigger, stronger, faster and fresher. End of story. The question that remained was just how it would happen. Would Jones put Tito to sleep? Would he box circles around Trinidad, mimicking Winky Wright, en route to an easy decision? Would this supposed epic clash deliver the type of thrills that their names have become synonymous with? Read the Full Story.....

Pantera Back with a Bang; Miranda blasts Banks through the Ropes By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com
The fight began slowly with David Banks doing what he needed to be effective against such a heavy hitter like Edison Miranda. Banks kept moving, circling to his right, in order to avoid Miranda’s a big right hand. I saw the 1st round to be even with neither man scoring very effectively. No surprise there given the vastly contrasting styles these two brought to the ring. Read the Full Story.....

JERMAIN TAYLOR "QUOTES" FROM YESTERDAY'S MEDIA WORKOUT - LAS VEGAS

Jermain Taylor: You're OK not fighting for a belt this time? "When I win, I'll be walking out of there with everything he took from me. I'm walking out of there with my pride." Is it working out better without Emanuel? "It feels great. It's just like the old days. When we started out it was just me and Ozell. I'm working hard every day. I'm doing a lot more sparring. Emanuel Steward is a great guy, a Hall of Fame trainer and a friend of mine. I love him to death. But he isn't coaching me now." Why is the unconventional training necessary, using the sledgehammer, tire and tennis balls? "The tennis balls are for slipping punches, so I don't get hit with the punches I got hit with in the fight. As far as the tire, it gives you muscle and endurance. I had him hurt in the second round and I didn't finish him. If I had the endurance, I wouldn't have gotten tired. I would have finished him." Read the Full Story.....
Interview with Edison “Pantera” Miranda By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com

Edison Miranda – “I watched the last Lacy fight and was not impressed at all. I also watched the Contender and my feeling was the same about Bika. These guys are simply not at my level.” I caught up with the punishing power puncher Edison Miranda following his sensational knockout of David Banks on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights. As always Miranda pulled no punches, so to speak, as he gave me his take on a second fight with Pavlik, his thoughts on Jeff Lacy and Sakio Bika and what a typical day of training entails. The once top rated Middleweight contender now inhabits the Super Middleweight division. And make no mistake about it he wants to fight the best the division has to offer. Here is what Pantera had to say, enjoy. PS: Firstly congratulations on an outstanding, sensational win over David Banks. Miranda: Thank you very much. PS: Since becoming one of the top rated Middleweights you recently made the move up to Super Middleweight. You fought Allan Green at a catch weight of 162 before meeting Pavlik at 160. When did you realize that physically you could no longer make the Middleweight limit? Miranda: I’ve always had trouble since I was a big Middleweight, but in the Pavlik fight my body would not lose the weight no matter what I did. I felt like I had an obligation to the fans to fight that night, but afterwards, I knew I had to consider going to Super Middleweight. Read the Full Interview.....
| LOS ANGELES, JANUARY 16 – With two thrilling bouts already in the books, the series between super bantamweight superstars Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez has already drawn favorable comparisons to boxing’s great rivalries – Ali vs Frazier, Barrera vs Morales, Zale vs Graziano, and Gatti vs Ward. But with the series deadlocked at one fight apiece, the only way to settle the score is with a third meeting, and on Saturday, March 1st, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., boxing’s latest classic trilogy will come to an end when Vazquez puts his WBC and Ring Magazine World super bantamweight titles on the line in a 12 round bout against the man he won it back from, Marquez. | Moments ago, I spoke with none other than trainer extraordinaire, Floyd “ Joy” Mayweather Sr. The ever confident pugilist coach shared his thoughts on his much anticipated return to the corner of the Golden Goose in boxing, Oscar De La Hoya. Here is what the self- anointed “ best trainer in the world” had to say about his new high profiled assignment. Oscar De La Hoya. JM: Floyd, will you conform the rumors of your return to the De La Hoya camp and that you’ll be in his corner for his next fight May 3rd on HBO? FM: Yes. That is correct. JM: Do you have any insight on who’ll oppose Oscar on May 3rd? Read the Full Interview..... |
Main Event: Delvin Rodriguez vs. Troy Browning Live from the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino a great night of exhilarating boxing took place. Broadcast live on ESPN2 and promoted by Star Boxing the show featured an intriguing Welterweight match-up between a fairly well established young fighter, Delvin Rodriguez, versus an aging but undefeated veteran in Troy Browning. A bit of a crossroads fight for both men with Rodriguez looking to reaffirm himself as a viable prospect/contender in the games hottest division and Browning seeking a signature win to legitimize his unbeaten record and further his career which at 40 years old has presumably passed him by.
Star Boxing Shines at Mohegan Sun; Delvin Rodriguez and Ali Oubaali notch decisive victories By: Phil Santos – Overhandright.com From Ringside

Both fighters were coming off solid wins, for Rodriguez a TKO over Keenan Collins and for Browning a Majority Decision over Julio Cesar Garcia, but it was a recent loss for Rodriguez that he needed to erase from fans memories. The fight in question came against Jesse Feliciano in March of 2007. Rodriguez had dominated much of the action leading into the eighth frame when Feliciano caught him with a series of right hands. Rodriguez showed heart in attempting to weather the storm but Feliciano dropped him a total of three times before the fight was stopped. To Rodriguez credit he has never faced a long line of soft

| opposition and he has fared very well considering, his only two losses to date had come against Feliciano and back in 2002 versus Andre Eason. Browning while the beneficiary of a flawless record cannot say the same as the only credible name on his résumé is that of Julio Cesar Garcia. Right from the jump Rodriguez asserted himself as the aggressor jumping all over the slower more plodding Browning. This would be a common theme throughout the fight as it became clear, even early on, that Rodriguez’s youth and stamina would play a major role in the outcome. Browning looked in excellent condition but as Rodriguez continuously dug shots to his midsection the gasps for breath were coming more frequently and becoming more pronounced. By the middle rounds Browning had resorted to picking and choosing moments to find success. His attack slowed to the point where it now consisted of a potshot here and there with hopes of catching the younger, fresher and frankly more skilled Rodriguez with something substantial. With the Feliciano lesson learned Rodriguez would have none of it. He wisely out hustled and out boxed his opponent while landing power shots whenever Browning gave him an opening. It was a graduation of sorts for Rodriguez who seemed to realize that forcing the action, even against a lesser skilled opponent, can have dire consequences. As the fight wore on nearing its conclusion Rodriguez was having his way with Browning. The only optimistic comment I can muster on Browning’s behalf was that he deserves credit for still being there after having endured a vicious body beating and being outclassed for 10 one-sided rounds. For Rodriguez this was a solid victory against a game opponent with a suspect record. The manner in which he scored this victory is a credit to Delvin Rodriguez who never so much as struggled for a moment or took a round off. The kid fought hard and remained focused throughout. My scorecard had it a sweep for Delvin Rodriguez at 100-90 while the judges saw it 99-91 and 100-90(2). This was a nice step forward for Rodriguez who with continued success could land a noteworthy bout or two in a talent laden division. Co-Feature: Ali Oubaali vs. Ashley Theophane In the evenings Co-Feature the highly touted Ali Oubaali squared off against Ashley Theophane. The fight began slowly with Theophane circling the ring in an apparent showing of respect for Oubaali’s power. Both the 1st and 2nd rounds unfolded in very similar fashion with Theophane circling and Oubaali stalking and winning on aggression and work rate alone. It wasn’t until the 6th round that a decisive blow was landed with Theophane scoring a knockdown. It was questionable and could have been ruled a slip however punches were thrown and the right call appeared to have been made. Interestingly that was the only knockdown of the evening despite the heaviest punches coming from Oubaali. At a few separate points throughout the bout Oubaali had Theophane hurt but failed to close the show. During one heated exchange Oubaali catapulted Theophane’s mouthpiece twenty feet from the ring with a stinging right hand. Theophane had some success when he let his hands go but too often in crucial spots he failed to fire off punches. In reality neither fighter really established themselves as the dominant force which left many rounds very difficult to score. In a tough fight to call I scored it 95-94 for Ashley Theophane while the judges saw it 97-92 and 96-93(2). The wide margin decisions seem a bit much however I could have made an argument for either fighter in a number of different rounds. Non Televised Portion: Yathomas Riley & Ray Robinson Yathomas Riley: On the non-televised portion of the Delvin Rodriquez vs. Troy Browning under card Yathomas Riley made an impressive professional debut.
